Could Burns have called his playing partner over to help with the ruling?

Instead of leaving it in the hands of a rules official, could guys in his situation call a playing partner in to help with the ruling instead?

If nothing else then when the rules official comes over you have back up?

The worst part about all of this is how Burns let it dominate his mindset, he should have committed to hitting a different shot instead of trying to hit a normal full bore fade. Play it like a fairway bunker where you know your lie and footing are precarious. You could see it was over after they screwed him on the ruling. That didn’t have to cost him the tournament.

Didn't he have a decent shot at getting up and down if he wouldn't have duffed his chip?

It was a bad break, but those were happening all day to everyone.

He just fully imploded across the back 9 and already had a double before that.

Sadly, I think Tiger, Rory, Scottie and a few others would have gotten a favorable ruling without having to ask for a second opinion.

I hope Burns uses the outcome as fuel to fire him up for future majors.

Burns shot 78 and Adam Scott shot 79.

Easily the worst two rounds of anybody remotely having a shot. I see one other 79 and an 82 farther down the board.

Seemed that the USGA had an agenda for getting this done on Sunday. I believe Oakmont had a Monday morning 3 woman scramble that already had that tee time.

Burns was 5 shots worse than anyone else in the top 10 other than Scott. I alluded to it yesterday. Sam could have shot 80 on Saturday. He had incredible par saves on 7 or 8 holes. It was going to catch up to him sooner or later. I hate it for him, anyway he could beat us all blindfolded and left handed. I hope he gets it done and doesnt let it get him down. He's a famous multimillionaire and one of the best players in the world. Many times grest players will have to do this half a dozen times to get there mentally to get over this hump. It took Adam Scott a decade and he hasnt done it since.

You joke but this probably isn’t far off. It’s been said Oakmont is more pretentious than Augusta with how they treat members, guests, etc…I texted a friend (member) yesterday and asked him a similar question which I already knew the answer, he said Oakmont is gonna Oakmont! In other words, screw these people and get them off our course.

In a word, no.

PGA Tour professionals, by their own admission, are not rules experts. They will call for a rules official over plainly obvious things. They know what they don't know.

I hope you guys don’t think the members at oakmont determine whether the US Open gets delayed or played.

The USGA and NBC made the call. Nobody wanted a Monday finish.

No they don’t. Just a rib about Oakmont. Although I could see the members grumbling, but it was just a joke.

He was toast before that IMO. Him trying to hit a 7iron 190 on a severe uphill lie ended up being a costly decision as well. Ball fell short in the rough and he went spiraling.

i still say he started to unravel on i think 11. good shot up the middle\right of the fairway but the announcers were saying if his group was up to see the group before them they would have known they needed more carry. his ball rolls and rolls and rolls down the slope of the fairway into the 1st cut...fine, but its in the forward spot of a divot. very unfortunate, but nothing these guys haven't hit out of. but the good shot he executed ended up in a shite lie. i think he got good club on that next shot, but left if short in the bunker or the thick stuff next to it and then he flew the green and got his first double. to me, that is where he started to show it was getting to him.

agree
fans would have been out there licking up the water around Tiger's ball, moving it so he could redrop without penalty.
That ruling was a result of the 2nd official not wanting to upstage the 1st official. I have seen it many times with the USGA, The officials are just guys that sign up to be part of the tournament. That was one of the worst rulings in golf history, and you are correct, neither Jack, nor Tiger would have ever let that pass. It was just plainly wrong.
