Bengals first round pick DE Shemar Stewart continues to sit out of training camp

Bengals drafted him 17th overall. There's a dispute over contract language, so he's been out all spring and refuses to practice. All of this is while not extending DE Trey Hendrickson, who is also sitting out.
quote:
The Bengals are insisting on a contract clause saying a default by Stewart in any year of the contract would void of all his remaining guarantees. The Bengals have never insisted upon such language before; with their previous contracts, they have only made a void wipe out the guarantees for the year in which the default occurred.

What do they mean by default?

One thing that wasn't clear to me was if this language is common in NFL contracts or not? If it is not, I can understand why he is sitting out, especially if their other picks did not have this language as has been reported.

In NFL contracts, a default occurs when a player violates the terms of their agreement, such as by engaging in prohibited activities that lead to injury or committing conduct detrimental to the team.

i can understand sitting out. they could say a lot of things fit that definition if they wanna get out of the contract.

None of this matters for his situation. This is the contract they have for you.

Obviously the guy they're offering the contract with the team friendly get out jail clause.

It does matter. He doesn't have to sign it. They can offer a contract with a clause that says the player has to legally change their name to "Mike Brown's Bitch" but that doesn't mean the player has to agree to it.
I would imagine if this is the first time language like this has shown up in a contract, the NFLPA will have their say on it, too.

Bengals gonna Bengals. Best QB/WR combo in the league and they are trying to screw over their first round pick on his contract.

Paying up on offense they had to get cheap somewhere.

If you look at the Bengals 1st round picks the last few years, they've been mediocre to bad. Stewart is a low college production player they're hoping will blow up in the pros.
This move seems like the front office is hedging on risky picks they made. I don't think either party is really wrong or right, but it's a bad look for the bengals who continue to squabble with their players over contracts.

Get Jeaux out of that clown organization.

Jeaux is a big reason bengals are in this situation. Had to pay him & keep his boys Jamarr and Tee

That’s smart but the way it’s set up you can’t do that… the outcome you had with one player is your outcome with that player,. no ones allowing themselves to be burden with another player’s outcome

Bengals released LB Germaine Pratt a few days ago probably to get some money to sign Trey Hendrickson.

He should, though I don't know how he goes about doing it now that he signed that 5 year deal. I'm not familiar enough with franchise tags and whatnot in the NFL, so I don't know what he could've done prior to that deal, but Cincinnati will always be a bit of a joke, far as an NFL franchise is concerned. Course, Dallas has a lot of money and spends it, and they are a joke as well.
He sure would look good in a Steelers uniform.

Bengals ownership is horrible.

I guess they may be worried he’ll have character issues and didn’t want to be on the hook for a ton of money.
