The film takes place in 2020 — yes, that 2020 — in the most visceral way, with the anti-mask local sheriff (Joaquin Phoenix) of the fictional Eddington, New Mexico, facing off against the town’s COVID-guideline-advocate mayor, played by Pedro Pascal (the second of his three summer releases). The heavy-hitter cast also includes Emma Stone, Austin Butler, Luke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward, Amélie Hoeferle, Clifton Collins Jr., and William Belleau, all of whom represent various perspectives on the pandemic spectrum.

I’m not an A24 fanboy, but this looks damn good. As long as it ends how a western should and doesn’t turn into a 30 minute closing act mirroring Cowboys vs Aliens, I’m in.

Have a feeling this will be a love it or hate it movie. I do agree that I'm sick of pascal being in everything.

+1 it's pretty absurd. We just got the last of us. Now I'm seeing trailers for this and another one called the materialist. Dude is everywhere.

Maybe this is a related anecdote

Supposedly when Samuel L Jackson was talking with Bruce Willis.... Willis told Jackson not to worry about overexposure so long as the audience likes your personality. Especially the kind of character that they associate with you personally.

That's probably true for some or many of the actors with career longevity like Schwarzenegger, Carrey, Travolta, Freeman. When people start to dislike you personally that becomes a problem.

If Pedro had cultivated the Viper character I think his exposure would be fine. I think his problem is his acting parts haven't added to his likability and he is taking lead roles that require some of that.

It's funny that he's usually in roles where he's manly and everywhere he goes he shows up in something like knickers and see thru mesh top.

I really like him as an actor, he's talented, he has great comedic ability, can play a tough guy, kind of like a Burt Reynolds thing but it ruins it in real life when he shows up wearing a pearl necklace and a baggy dress.

Hopefully the bigot Sheriff is forced to wear his mask and take the jab. We were two weeks behind Italy and he thinks this is a game.
