Superman box office tracking for a $154-175mm domestic OW; 1 billion WW run in reach

Screenrant
The numbers are definitely encouraging for the new DCU—it could beat out BvS and Minecraft earlier this year ($163mm).
Jurassic World comes out the week prior and Fantastic 4 two weeks after Supes. I think F4 may struggle in its wake but Jurassic will do well internationally
They also partnered with Fortnite as Superman is the main character in the new Fortnite season leading into the release

Per Box Office Theory, its opening debut will likely fall in the $154-$175 million range domestically. This would place it among the largest first-weekend gross of 2025.

Let's not start sucking each other's dicks quite yet.

A billion seems high to me but maybe there really is still a huge superman fanbase that attends movies.

Way too early for this, presales haven't even started. And it's not making a billion. I wish they'd stop putting these types expectations on these films. It'll finish around the 700 mil range.

If it opens on the high side of the projection at $175mm I think it will hit it by looking at other comps. It’ll depend on the legs but it’ll get close
Minecraft 162->950mm
Civil war 179->1.1bb

All we can do is go off the numbers, correct? It absolutely has a shot based on these projections. Their internals are showing it and Jeff Sneider corroborated the numbers

I hope it does, but I would be willing to ban bet anyone that it doesn't. 650-750 is my prediction. There's genuine comic book fatigue, the international market is not as strong as it once was, and honestly, it doesn't look that great to me. I hope I'm wrong.

THR. It seems some of the estimates come from trailer views and social media hype, maybe they’re getting better at forecasting. We’ll see but it’s interesting that it’s being so well received.
I do think there is Marvel fatigue, but it seems to me DC may finally have a foot in the door. They have fresh / new characters that aren’t all screwed up with the multiverse

Trailers looked mediocre, so I do not understand the hype. I think it will do well first weekend, but once people see its simply a mediocre film, it will peter out.
Reality is that before social media had such influence a mediocre movie could get really good second and third weekends before word of mouth killed interest. Now with social media, it can be killed before it even opens.

I'll take the over. this is the first Superman movie for another generation of kids. Superman is massive and globally recognized.
The first Guardians of the Galaxy made more than your prediction.

Which is why lilo and stitch bombed…

Kids today watch the animated lilo and stitch. No kids are watching Snyder’s trash Superman movies.

But he’s the main hero of their new season and the movie has krypto. This is going to appeal to families

Which is why they will see this family friendly one. It’s not dark, sad Superman.
This is more in line with cartoons and comics. Hell, Superman goes back 4 generations.

That’s how far you have to go back to find a good Superman movie.

Seems like their marketing strategy is to get most of their domestic within the first couple of weekends by generating buzz/hype and hope & pray the word of mouth is solid.
This is why it’s not uncommon for the studios to buy up a few million tickets on opening weekend to guarantee the top spot and be able to run the ads the following week: “don’t miss the #1 movie in the country…etc…”
*It sounds stupid on its face but the box office split is usually more in the 60/40 range opening weekend, so dropping $20m on tickets really only costs them $8m in marketing spent

I hate that a billion is somehow now seen as a failure if you don’t make it.

The main goal for them will definitely be making a good movie first and foremost. Even if it only makes 750mm, if it’s good then the rest of the DCU will be set up to succeed.
It’s like when Batman Begins was released. It didn’t make a ton of money but it was awesome, and the Joker in the sequel set it up to do crazy numbers at the time
