From a competitive standpoint it made sense for Musk to be against the EV subsidies because he had such a far lead against the competition in the U.S. that it would hurt his competition more than it hurt Tesla

Correct. Tesla needs these subsides more than ever. A business can’t survive losing billions in one hit. Add his behavior it will be even worse.
