I asked A.I. for the Top 10 best episodes of Tales from the Crypt

Gotta say I’m pretty much in agreement, especially the top pick.
quote:
10. "The Man Who Was Death" (Season 1, Episode 1) The series premiere introduces Niles Talbot, an executioner who turns vigilante after losing his job. William Sadler’s performance and the dark irony of his fate set the tone for the series. Its gritty noir vibe and twist ending make it a memorable opener.
9. "Dig That Cat… He’s Real Gone" (Season 1, Episode 3) A homeless man gains nine lives through a mad scientist’s experiment but uses them for profit in a carnival act. Joe Pantoliano’s sleazy charm and the gruesome escalation of his “deaths” deliver a darkly funny cautionary tale about greed.
8. "The Ventriloquist’s Dummy" (Season 2, Episode 10) A young ventriloquist seeks mentorship from a retired performer, only to uncover a disturbing secret. Bobcat Goldthwait and Don Rickles shine, with the episode’s creepy dummy and shocking reveal making it a fan favorite for its psychological horror.
7. "Cutting Cards" (Season 2, Episode 3) Two gamblers, played by Lance Henriksen and Kevin Tighe, engage in a high-stakes game of Russian roulette and chop poker. The intense rivalry and gory one-upmanship create a tense, darkly comedic episode that’s pure Crypt chaos.
6. "The New Arrival" (Season 4, Episode 7) A radio psychologist tries to boost his show’s ratings by visiting a disturbed listener’s home. David Warner and Zelda Rubinstein deliver chilling performances, and the episode’s slow-burn suspense and twisted ending make it a standout.
5. "What’s Cookin’" (Season 4, Episode 6) A struggling diner owner gets a boost from a mysterious meat supplier. Christopher Reeve, Judd Nelson, and Meat Loaf star in this darkly humorous tale of culinary success gone wrong, with a deliciously grim twist.
4. "Yellow" (Season 3, Episode 14) Set during World War I, this episode follows a cowardly soldier facing execution. Directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Kirk Douglas, Eric Douglas, and Dan Aykroyd, it’s a dramatic departure from the show’s usual tone, with a powerful anti-war message and gut-punch ending.
3. "Death of Some Salesmen" (Season 5, Episode 1) Tim Curry steals the show as a twisted family of con artists who prey on a sleazy salesman, played by Ed Begley Jr. The episode’s over-the-top performances, black humor, and grotesque surprises make it a quintessential Crypt experience.
2. "And All Through the House" (Season 1, Episode 2) A woman murders her husband on Christmas Eve, only to face an escaped maniac dressed as Santa. Directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Mary Ellen Trainor, this episode’s festive horror, tight pacing, and ironic twist make it a holiday classic.
1. "Television Terror" (Season 2, Episode 16) A tabloid TV host investigates a haunted house, broadcasting live as things go horribly wrong. Morton Downey Jr.’s manic performance, combined with the episode’s meta-commentary on sensationalist media and genuinely creepy atmosphere, earns it the top spot for its unforgettable scares and social bite.

I asked my daughter to get packed for camp. She didn't listen.

Does anyone know why HBOMAX doesn't carry the series? It was created for HBO, ergo you would think it would be part of their library.

HBO can’t do anything with the Tales from the Crypt I.P. because the estate of William Gaines owns the copyright to the comics, the stories, the name Tales from the Crypt and the crypt keeper name. HBO owns the crypt keeper of the show (different likeness) but can’t call him the Crypt Keeper. The show had a few different producers Robert Zemeckis, Richard Donner (I assume his estate inherited the rights) and Joel Silver. The only way the show could get any kind of reboot or merchandising is if all parties agree to a contract. However it seems like the Gaines estate and Robert Zemeckis HATE Joel Silver with a passion. Joel Silver is a notorious a-hole and is the basis of Tom Cruise’s Les Grossman character in Tropic Thunder. Basically we all have to wait for Joel Silver to die before we can get any closer to Tales from the Crypt to so much as stream on MAX.
edit - the gaines estate could always shop the rights to a reboot of the series, however as I mentioned the HBO Crypt Keeper wouldn't be a part of it. Considering the HBO crypt keeper is a pop culture icon i can see nobody would want to make a show without it. Total stalemate.

Thank you. I should have googled it but, well, I am lazy today.

The Ventriloquist’s Dummy
Thought of this one before I even opened your post. Scared the shite out of a young Sidetrack Silvera. That was the last time I picked up my Howdy Doody dummy.

I've been wanting to binge TftC forever now, and have come close to pulling the trigger on buying the series on DVD. I just am not sure I will like it enough to justify that (the complete series isn't too cheap).
I believe you used to be able to watch some episodes on youtube, but not sure if that is still a thing or if they have been removed.

I bet that AI scanned the internet for a bunch of human-based polls on the topic and averaged them out.

That was my must see TV. Dream on and Tales from the Crypt.

frick yeah! My dad and I used to watch both of these. Good childhood memories. Tales from the Crypt is one of my top five favorite shows of all time and Dream On is the answer I give for most underrated HBO show.

I used to have recurring nightmares of the crypt keeper as a kid that he lived in my parent's closet.
I couldn't be in the room for the start of the show because I thought it would trigger the nightmares, lol.

That's a pretty good list. I like "The Secret" too. Would have had that on there somewhere.
