Private sector job creation slowed to a near standstill in May, hitting its lowest level in more than two years as signs emerged of a weakening labor market, payrolls processing firm ADP reported Wednesday.

Payrolls increased just 37,000 for the month, below the downwardly revised 60,000 in April and the Dow Jones forecast for 110,000. It was the lowest monthly job total from the ADP count since March 2023.

The report comes two days before the more closely watched nonfarm payrolls count from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which is expected to show a gain of 125,000 and the unemployment rate steady at 4.2%.

While the two reports often differ, occasionally by large margins, the ADP count provides another snapshot of the jobs picture at a time when questions are being raised over broader economic conditions.

“After a strong start to the year, hiring is losing momentum,” said Nela Richardson, chief economist for ADP.

Goods-producing industries lost a net 2,000 positions for the month, with natural resources and mining off 5,000 and manufacturing down 3,000, offset by a gain of 6,000 in construction.

On the services side, leisure and hospitality (38,000) and financial activities (20,000) provided some signs of strength. However, declines of 17,000 in professional and business services, 13,000 in education and health services, and 4,000 in trade, transportation and utilities weighed on the total.

Companies employing fewer than 50 workers saw a loss of 13,000 while those with 500 or more employees reported a drop of 3,000. Mid-size firms gained 49,000.

Anecdotal, but I’m in client service so talk to a lot of different people/companies. I don’t know anyone, including our firm, competitors, or clients that are hiring outside of replacements or special circumstances.

Financials still seem to be fine and growing slightly so I’m not sounding the alarms, seems to be more conservative than reactionary as of now.

Why? Can you share your personal insight on the situation?

Sometimes I wonder if edging myself to every indicator number, such as employment numbers every month, or the lake levels or trends in car sales, just isn't worth what I'm spending on jergens.

There is a current war on small business and we're propping up big corporations.

Anecdotally, I’ve seen some friends in the engineering space with very good resumes and experience that have been having trouble finding jobs for a month plus now.

They were laid off from downsizing at some of the plants around, and it’s been a struggle for them.

Nobody is talking about it but the job market is very bad right now.

Now blue collar positions are always open for it seems, but that’s a shrinking labor pool issue.

AI or the hope of AI is killing a lot of jobs but that’s not going to be the narrative.

How much of this is due to the pressure being applied around illegal aliens?

This is fake

Those are “ghost jobs” where employers post openings to look like they’re growing to shareholders

How is AI killing jobs? Can you explain which jobs AI is stealing from the human employees?

If your job is pushing paper or sending emails you had to realize that it couldn’t last forever. Faking looking like you’re busy for a whole career isn’t sustainable

Humanity accomplished way more before the invention of paper and the pink collar industry. We built the pyramids and the coliseum all without paper and an hr department or mid level managers
