Which of these two studios do you feel like has the superior catalog?

I like Dreamworks a lot, but I think Pixar has a better catalog and I don't think it's particularly close.

Pixar has a better catalog and it's no contest.
That said, I think Illumination from Universal is on to something with their Despicable Me franchise and the Nintendo licensing.

Pixar has the superior catalogue by far, but if you limit it to recent releases (past decade), I think Illumination beats them both.

I think it's easily Pixar, mainly because I think Pixar, at its best, is better than the other two at their best. But I also think DreamWorks and Illuminations are both also really good. Especially Illuminations considering the other two had a decade and a decade and a half head start on them...Illuminations movies have made some serious bank.

How about Studio Ghibli?
ETA did I see where a Toy Story 5 is coming or was that fake news? They just need to stop.

I always enjoyed the backstory of how Dreamworks got created. Jeffrey Katzenberg was head of Disney studios from 84 - 94 and was over all the animated movies in the late 80's and early 90's that saw the Disney resurgence. Beauty and the beast, little mermaid, lion king, tarzan. He also brokered the first deal with Pixar for Toy Story.
Then he and Eisner got in a pissing match and he left and started Dreamworks with Spielberg. Disney animation goes in the crapper but luckily they have Pixar now to pick up the slack. Would have been interesting to see what would have happened if he stayed at Disney, but I like that we have two animation studios putting out good to great movies on a regular basis.

I think Pixar has movies that adults can appreciate more, but Dreamworks seems to be making movies that my kids enjoy more.

Agreed - I think Minions/Mario/Migration are better than any recent outputs from the other.

I have 3 kids between 7-12. Over most of their movie watching lives it would easily go Illumination>Dreamworks>pixar as far as what they’d look forward to and actually really want to see.

I think you gotta give Pixar credit for only now starting to hammer their franchises
Illumination makes good
moves for sure. i really like themZ
they’ve made 6 movies in the Gruniverse (if they don’t call it this they should) and a 7th is slated to come out in 2026
2 secret life of pets in 4 years 2 sing
and they are working on their second Mario movie
Great movies but they have come out with basically 4 good concepts and hammered them and 1 is Mario which is an established IP
