What are some pros and cons of staying in each town. Some say Canmore is a little less touristy and slightly cheaper, but further from the NP. Headed up around mid July; which in your opinion is better. Any other recs for the area welcome also. (Flying into Calgary and taking a rental)

We prefer Banff even though the cost is higher. Staying there is in our opinion better than driving in from Canmore. But either are great options.

Either is fine to stay. Depends on budget.

As far as recs, If you and your party is in shape, Via Ferrata. I keep recommending this here but no one listens. Imagine this experience. We did it with zero climbing experience…

Banff…. It’s where all the action is. If you search you will find my itinerary from a couple summers ago

We needed a three bedroom place and Canmore was our best option for that. The drive to Banff wasn’t bad. Parking in Banff is a pain but we were usually there early and always found a place to park, usually at the tourist center parking lot.

In Canmore we went to the Grizzly Paw brewery which was nice. There is also a trail close to there that is definitely worth the trip, Grassi Lakes. We spent most of our time in Banff though.

The Grassi Lakes hike was pretty good. I’d strongly recommend that

Banff is the place or stay out in the Forrest in between Lake Louise and Banff. We did one night in Banff at the Moxy. Got the best suite upgrade. Banff is busy and its nice to get away from that. Then 3 nights at Baker Creek Basecamp. It was fantastic to have a creek with firepits right out the cabin door.

Another vote for Baker Creek Basecamp located halfway between Banff and Lake Louise. It was a bit pricey, but a great experience having communal firepits and the creek right outside your cabin. Perfect mix of cabin comfort and rustic nature environment. Save money by getting groceries in Banff to cook dinner at the cabin. Location also makes it easier to beat the early morning crowds in the park and Lake Louise.
