Anyone ever done this? I got an alert on my phone telling me my vehicle registration is coming up due for renewal and I can renew on my LA Wallet app if I go to it.

Well, I go to it, and it says the renewal fee is $70 with a $23 "convenience fee" for a total of $93.

What the hell is that? Are they tacking on nearly 1/3 of the entire renewal fee just for the convenience of doing this if I want to renew this way?

Do you want to pay for the convenience of not having to go to the DMV or do you want to just bitch about it?

Man, you don't OWN your drivers' license. The State OWNS it, you just rent it.

We ain't free in America.

Don't let anyone fool you.

I've always just paid after it was mailed to me in the past. Lately it has been paid online. I don't think any sort of "convenience fee" had ever previously been more than $3 or so. Yes, I'm going to bitch about paying a 1/3 extra tax on this already stupid tax for the convenciene of me electronically sending them my money. It doesn't make a lot of sense.

Look into sovereign citizen law. All this stuff is unconstitutional and you don’t have to do it.

I did it on expresslane recently but I don't remember what the total was. Now you make me want to go look.

That's probably the surcharge one of the private DMV places charge

Free legal advice: this is wrong.

It's the website for the LA OMV, so I'm sure it's related to the LA Wallet. I get mailed a notice where I can do it online and they mail it a few weeks later. Just got the new registration this weekend.

No, I'm asking about the private DMV places you're referencing. Why would any surcharge they might charge come into play here?

Oh I meant it as the state going for the bag and equivocating using them with the convenience of the app.

And via Expresslane it was $42 + 3 fee for $45 total. No idea why it would even start at $70 via the app other than state-backed gouging.

The actual registration fee is tied to the value of the vehicle, I believe.

I thought I might be as frugal as you, but I guess not.

You can do it online with the information provided in the renewal notice. The "convenience" fee is like $4 if I remember correctly.

Apparently there is a state law requiring these charges to be applied to online transactions.
