Want to go to USVI, specifically St Thomas, next spring break. There are lot nicer places for less money on Airbnb than searching the resort sites. But I’ve never used one outside of the us mainland. Are they reliable? My wife is worried if something goes wrong we won’t have a ‘front desk’ to call, which I get. But they’re also pretty highly rated. I don’t know much about Airbnb to begin with as I’ve only used it a handful of times?

I don't know what resort sites you've looked at but you might consider searching at the homes on Caribbean Villas of St. John We rented a home from them and were very impressed. Someone from their office met us at the house upon check-in and were available all week if we had questions.

Used Airbnb when we went to Aruba. Super nice condo minutes from the beach in a gated area.

We’ve done it a few times and had mostly good experiences. Be very observant of pictures. If they appear to be panoramic the house will be much smaller than advertised. Air conditioning to me is very important. If it is to you then be sure the house has it and ask if you will be charged for running it. If so, it’s not cheap so be aware of this. If it’s just my wife and I I agree with your wife. Having a front desk is worth it to us. If my entire family is coming then I will look at AirBNB.

these days in the USVI, you may want to ask about a backup generator. House in St. John last time didnt have one, but we just rolled with the blackouts. Had plenty of ice for drinks!

Never had a problem using Vrbo in the Caribbean. Just stick with rentals that have a high rating, the more ratings the better. Also check every detail in the description. Some rentals don’t have hot water which is a big nope for me

in St. John, we use VRBO to research, but then you can typically google search the name of the villa and find a local management company and pay less than all the VRBO fees.

Use foreign AirBNBs all the time. Also called front desk once at a hotel in 30 years.
