Looking to purchase a pellet grill, anyone have any insight on the Pit Boss 850 DX(Lowe’s) or Pit Boss 850 competition(Academy)?

I’m looking at them. Friend has one and loves it. Will check for model. But his is protected under a covered patio.

Me, I’m concerned if the tech or function is something that will easily rust out, break, etc in a few years or maybe not?

2 family members have them and love them, easy to use and it links up via Bluetooth and probes. Hard to pass it up while on sale this weekend

I purchased the 850dx from Lowes a month or so ago. I've smoked a turkey, pork ribs, and did a 20 lb brisket Friday. I did buy one of these to help with the hot spots. LINK

Wife bought me a ZGrill as a surprise. It has worked well.

I was very pleased with a brisket I did 3 weeks ago. Cooked it on 225 until 160 degrees then wrapped in butcher paper til 203. Rested in cooler for almost 3 hours.

I did use a smoke tube for additional smoke. It had a very good color and bark.

The pellets lasted around 8 hours before needing to add more. Definitely need to monitor the levels on long cooks.

I currently have a ZGrill, 2 years old and has held up well. I'm contemplating getting in on the buy one for $777 and get 10 free deal. ZGrill

It was very respectful and polite of you to serve the burned pieces to yourself.

It’s not burnt. Just the seasoning but, i did grab the ones with the most color.

To keep the skin crisp and not have to throw them in oil you have to go high heat.

There are very few things on Earth that I recommend to my buddies harder than a pellet grill. If you do a lot of grilling and you dabble in smoking meats, getting one like the pit boss you mentioned from a big box store that can be opened to expose flame is a fantastic investment.

Pellets last a long time and the food comes out great. As posters above mentioned, the bluetooth capability and the probes make it easy.

Highly, highly recommend.

I have had a PitBoss Laredo for 2.5 years. Love the food that it produces...when working properly.

In the 2.5 years, I have had one of the 2 temperature probes quit working, it CONSTANTLY throws some type of error, it varies what kind, and stops cooking. I am on the 3rd control board. Free part...have to install myself. I hated having to work on something that cost several hundred dollars in the very first Summer that I bought it. REALLY hated having to do it again about a year later after not being able to deal with it cutting off my cooks. It still cant get through a pork butt without stopping atleast 4 times. I refuse to screw up a brisket trying to cook it on this.

For as easy as a pellet grill is supposed to be, I still have to go check it every 20-30 mins to make sure it hasn't thrown an error and stopped. The bluetooth app only notifies me of the error about half the time. It is awful. I feel like I cant even run to the grocery store to grab stuff for side dishes when I cook on it.

It is an outdoor cooking machine and stays under a PitBoss cover when not in use, but their reasoning, is sometimes the environment causes things to break.

I am trying to decide if I just want to scrap it and buy one of the higher dollar brands.

Just my experience...

My only suggestion is don't make the $800 mistake I did and buy a Green Mountain pellet grill. It wound up at the road to be scrapped after about 10 cooks and parts being replaced.

I now just have a simple old Traeger and it works just fine

same. Mine barely made it a year. Probes were toast within a couple months, then igniter went out, then finally the board. Not to mention I hated the thing. My oven smokes more than that POS.

Quickly went back to Recteq.

I ended up buying the PB 850dx from Lowe’s. Cooked pork ribs, beef ribs & chicken breast to break it in after initial burn off. It all came out great, thanks for all of the feedback.
