EBR School Board calls for amendments to St. George school system bills in legislature

quote:

The East Baton Rouge Parish School Board passed a resolution to ask for amendments to two bills that would create and regulate the proposed St. George school system.

So, does anyone have the details on what’s going on?

I am sure these demanded amendments will be to the benefit of the proposed St.G. school district.

They aren't wrong. Putting a reciprocal relationship for magnet and charter students into the bill interferes with the board's rights. It takes away from EBR and St.G the power to run their districts how they choose.

SB234 to establish the St. George Public School System was reported with amendments by a vote of 9-2. It now goes to the House floor for a vote. This bill will only require a simple majority to pass and go on the Governor to sign

Let's gooooo.

By the way, how does this work? Does SG have to buy the schools from EBR? For example, the new school in Jefferson Terrace... What happens there? Will the new school board just take over all schools in the SG city limits?

Just like with Central, Zachary, and Baker, the tax dollars follow the taxpayers of the area, not the EBR school district. All property goes to the area. St. George would not have to repurchase buildings and property that the tax payers of this area have already purchased.

How many schools will we have in the system, total? How many elementary, middle, and high schools? Is Woodlawn the only high school already built?

Four elementary - Woodlawn, Shenandoah, Westminster, and Jefferson Terrace
One middle - Woodlawn
One High - Woodlawn

I'm assuming the charters also. Yes Woodlawn High is the only HS
