How does that area compare to say the W North Carolina Blue Ridge area like the Pisgah Forest as far as outdoor activities and small town type things in the evenings.

Say I want to spend 3-4 days. Where should I look to base myself.

Adirondacks and most of upstate NY like the Hudson Valley are beautiful. I've never been to those NC places so can't compare but my guess is Vermont might be what you are looking for. Burlington is a really nice town with lots of bars and restaurants but surrounded by forested mountains with hiking, etc. Stowe/Waterbury is another great area. We will be back up there this summer.

Lake Placid in the summer is heaven on earth.

I’d say pretty similar scenery and stuff to do as North Carolina but Mirror Lake is way nicer than any lake in North Carolina.

It’s in the middle of nowhere though. A solid 2 hrs from the nearest real airport (Albany or Burlington) or 4.5 from Newark

That was option B.

The tentative plan was to rent a car and drive from NYC.

The finger lakes region of NY is really good wine country, if that interests you.

Fly into Burlington, VT. Spend time on Lake Champlain, then head to Lake George, NY and then a few days around Lake Placid. There are plenty of things to do around each lake.

I say yes.

Keep in mind that the Adirondacks area is large. NY DEC page has it at over six million acres, so you will have a range of places to stay if you plan to go. Lake Placid is beautiful in the summer and plenty of things to do and/or relax. About two hours away from Lake Placid is Old Forge, which is also a great place but much smaller. Don't expect a lot of options for late-night mountain life

We fly into Boston and drive to Lincoln, NH or Littleton. Stowe, VT is gorgeous in October.

We don’t do the trip every year, but it’s a great way to beat the heat when you’re tired of summer and it won’t go away in that October timeframe.

If you go to Lake George, you may want to head over to Saratoga. The race track and the Performing Arts Center (SPAC) are awesome.

ETA: I saw the Doobie Bros play there in the 70's. They are playing there again this summer...

Yes. Natural clear lakes, cool summer nights. It is truly a gem us southerners don't know about. I fortunately was able to do many trips up there early in my career for work, helping host O&G client events at one of the Great Camps.

As mentioned Burlington is a good base spot but at least rent a place for a couple nights on a lake around Saranac, Blue Mountain, Lake Placid, Old Forge. See if you can arrange a remote lake fishing trip via float plane.

Our place was at Blue Mountain Lake. Not much to do as far as bars and restaurants but instead spend the evenings sitting on the dock and sipping on your favorite spirits.
