Because Volantis was really, really good and they don't split the award between pitchers and position players.

He was really good. I still think Curiel should have edged him given the relative value of what they both did.

Hope Curiel takes this personally! Make the SEC pay!

Good. Curiel needs a chip on his shoulder Going into the post season.

People are going to lose their minds over this despite the fact that the only Texas baseball games they watched this year were from when they played LSU

Speaking of shoulders, Curiel has been nursing a (throwing) shoulder injury that’s been kept quiet. Will probably have surgery after the season

Could explain the dip in production at the plate perhaps

Volantis value relative to Texas probably exceeded Curiel's value relative to LSU.

I think Curiel's Mini slump towards the end of the regular season did him in.

Volantis has been really good all year and he's on the team that won the regular season sec title. So I can understand it.

As another poster above mentioned hopefully this gives him a chip on his shoulder and he mashes during the postseason.

Curiel did kind of tail off the last couple weeks. But they should have a freshman player and pitcher of the year award.

Not mad at the choice. Most people saw it coming. But yes, they need player vs pitcher awards.

Really not sure how Curiel or LSU recover from this tbh. Devastating news heading into the postseason. People will be talking about this for years to come.

he’s legitimately good but idk how you give it to a reliever over every day player.

Because Volantis was one of the best pitchers in the SEC. 1.66 ERA in 43.1 IP with 64Ks and only 11 BBs. He had 20 appearances. He gave up zero ERs in 15 of them. He gave up multiple ERs in 2 of them, one in their first game of the season and the other to Arkansas. And he was throwing 2+ innings almost every time he pitched. He shut our arse down twice. He pitched 5.1 scoreless innings against UGA. In fact, he was used in two games in a series 6 times in SEC play and gave up 1 ER combined over those 12 appearances. Dude was incredible.

Curiel slumping down the stretch allowed DV to back door into the award. Not overly surprising
