I went to two well known running shoe stores in Bham yesterday: TrakShak and Fleet Feet. Looking for a low stack height, 4mm drop or less shoe for my longer distances. This type of shoe used to be made by everyone. Brooks had the PureFlow and Saucony had the Kinvara. Loved both of those shoes.

Well...... everything is max cushion these days. Couldn't find a shoe under 28mm stack height. Even Altra had the high stack height. Ended up ordering a shoe from someone I'd never heard of before: Topo Athletic? Anyway, they make a 0mm drop and 14mm stack height shoe. Something a little more cushiony than my 6mm Xeros.

Topo is a legit company and make good shoes. I had a pair of the Specters, didn’t work for me personally, but were reviewed well overall.

Low stack + low drop is tough to find. Maybe Newton if they still exists? You can find one or the other fairly easily. Or get on eBay and order some dead stock.

Just realized New Balance has the FuelCell Pvlse and it can be had for like $50 right now. Supposedly 17mm stack, 2mm drop, FuelCell foam (which I love personally). Seems like a good flat.

Nice find! And while both of these stores carry New Balance, this shoe wasn't there.

It wasn’t widely distributed/announced. I only learned of it when I saw it pop up on the Joes New Balance Outlet site.

I wore altra lone peak for last 8 years hiking. 25mm stack. The superior is shorter I believe. Both are trail running type shoes.

I switched to Topo last year. Better grip and durability. Toe box isn't quite as wide as Altra but really close.

I have the mountain racer 4 topo. Not a zero drop but close I believe. I think the Topo Traverse may be a zero drop but not sure of height.

I needed a wide toe bed and bought a pair of Topo’s. They are great. Best athletic shoes I’ve ever had and I have tried them all.

I went to get some new shoes for light jogging and walking and ran into the same thing. The soles and cushions of these shoes are ridiculous. They look like clown shoes FFS.

Being that stack and drop are technically independent of each other what’s the aversion to higher stack if still 0-4 drop?

Aversion to staying injury free in the pursuit of avoiding injury.

Aubie, I’m kidding btw.

Stability. The higher stack height feels unnatural and unstable to me. Also, you totally lose ground feel with too much cushioning.

I ran 14 today in my Xeros. The best part was the roads that need to be paved. They are rougher and have little gouges in the pavement, rocks poking out, etc. it feels amazing on your feet in the barefoot shoes. Hard to describe unless you do it.

I’m not saying jump to something like superblast with 40+mm but maybe something like Altra flow experience with 4 drop and 30mm heel stack.

I ran in Altras for a long time. Torin and Escalante.

That 20ish mm stack height and 0-4 mm drop is the perfect shoe IMO for long distances or hard paces and now no one makes em anymore.

Topo Athletic St5’s came in today and I put my usual Thursday 7 miles of hills on them. Well made shoe and exactly what I wanted. It’s a lot like the Altra Torin, but without the pillowy cushioning and lack of ground feel. Wide toe box with a flexible mesh upper. I’ll use these for my longer efforts and race paces.

They made a couple of other shoes that I wouldn’t mind trying out.

I ordered a bunch of Topo shoes for my high school runners, and they declined them so I sent them back - still balancing the “those are weird” with my instance on low offset.

They all still prefer the Kinvara (4mm offset, 25ish stack).

I have 4 pairs of the previous Escalante Racer, the perfect shoe for me. I can’t run in normal escalante’s, as they have this unstable wobble to me.

Good find. Have been considering adding a new flat in to the rotation.
