these are the dates of the shows I would attend

10.3 OSLO, NO
10.5 COPENHAGEN, DK
10.7, 10.8 UTRECHT, NL
10.10 LONDON, UK
10.12 DUBLIN, IE

there would be plenty of Americans doing this tour but I’ve never been to Europe. So we would depart and return from MSY I can handle that my question would be about the best way to get from city to city…ideally arriving in each city the day before each show

Oslo-Cop Fly
Cop Utrecht Fly possibly into Amsterdam???
Utrecht-London EuroStar Chunnel train from Amsterdam
London-Dublin Fly

Better you than me. That will be a beat down of a trip. I would consider skipping either Cop or Utrecht so you can spend more time in one city.

thanks that helps greatly
as far as the schedule the shows are the reason to go. Since there’s two shows in Utrecht if we rent a car in Amsterdam we should have two days to do some sightseeing in NL. I do want to see Copenhagen and at least at the end we could stay a few days in Ireland then back to London then home

Train to Utrecht is a lot easier and cheaper. Utrecht is a cool town with a nice river walk type area and my favorite architect was from there, Gerrit Rietveld. If you like mid century modern go tour the Rietveld Schroeder house.

got it

so MSY to Oslo however that can be arranged
the fly Oslo to Copenhagen
then fly Copenhagen to Amsterdam
Then train to/from Amsterdam to Utrecht
then train from Amsterdam to London
Then fly London to dublin
then home whenever

thank you very much that doesn’t sound too bad or complicated

Seems like a lot of work just to follow Billy Strings around. Hopefully you don't have to rush home right after the Dublin show and can at least enjoy your time in Europe somewhere

Do you really need to go to every one of those shows? I'd just pick maybe two and spend the rest of the time touring around

Ha man, this is an interesting thing for someone your age. YOLO.

You can likely train almost every trip. You could also drive from Copenhagen to London, one way car drop off fee would suck. But you can ferry from Belgium to England easily by car. Maybe even by person and train from there, idk.

Trains are fantastic city center to city center but If the concerts are in “London” but actually 60 miles away it’ll suck.

ETA: how many people? Id train most of this if I was by myself. But if you have 3-4 a car rental will make some sense. Personally hate flying in Europe unless you have to. But as pointed out by Zappas his schedule is likely the best. But you maybe able to do some overnight trains to save you lodging and time, I’d try to do those.

You should probably think about this really hard. If you're in Dublin already, you can get to SNN, preclear immigration, and have a super relaxed flight home. I don't know how long you are going to spend there, but you're going to be beat to shoe leather after your original itinerary even if you cut out a destination as suggested. I envision you trying to gut it out and be a hero based on your original itinerary full of late concert nights, but a crowded arse London will drag you back to reality.

You realize how small NL is, right? I don't know who the band you're seeing is, so I can't gain any insight on what sort of activities you may enjoy. Pot, I'm guessing? I can imagine Phish and Dead fans doing something like this trip.

I would get to Oslo on 9/30 or 10/1.

This gives your body a chance to adjust before being put through the ringer.

yes i think we would just stay in ireland for several days then head home. i understand all the skepticism about show attendance but this is what we do for fun...honestly this is a perfect trip for us we will have a blast being on tour in brand new places, plus you meet tons of great people doing the same. YMMV

looks like the train from AMS to london is the only leg that books up fast, i have time on everything else

I wasn't trying to make fun of you, just trying to figure out what you were interested in besides music, lol.

Think about flying from AMS to London (make sure you search all airports, not just LHR.) 4 hours on the train for the same cost as 1 hour on BA or KLM ($108). You'll miss the scenery on the Paris-Amsterdam corridor (I guess there is scenery in the countryside before you hit the Chunnel) but it's nothing to write home about. There is a giant (four story tall) statue of a naked dude with his junk hanging out near the Eastern edge of Belgium you'll miss (it's the sign for a hardware store), but I can just email you a picture of it and you can pretend you took it.

If you have to fly look at London City airport, it’s quite central compared other…five? …in the city

Edit: BA or KLM for a nicer experience, otherwise check Transavia and Easyjet (both still better than Ryanair) for a more budget option - which with the short flying time between London & AMS probably wouldn’t be too painful

Come on man I know you are better than this. Sure, 1 hour flight compared to 4 hour train ride. But door to door is considerably different. Train you essentially show up 15 mins prior to the more likely central city train station, hop on with luggage, and then hop off city center of London. Airport he has to catch a ride to the airport 30 mins outside the city, get there 2 hours early, check his bags, get off, wait for bags, then catch a train or uber into the city center.

His planning really depends on the location and transportation to and from the actual concert locations in regards to his hotel.

The cheapest train at a rando weekday date (ETA in mid-June) is $167, with the average around $250 (cheapest fares leave before 0700). I get what you're saying, I spent a considerable amount of time trying to find a way to not fly between locations inside the EU and take the train instead, and I often couldn't justify the train due to the length, cost and inconvenience compared to $100 flight.

Touche, to your point I 100% agree on the costs. That's why I laugh at ignorant Americans that want more trains for the USA. The costs just aren't always there.

But my one counterpoint would be that train fare is generally ALL INCLUSIVE. Which is a big deal. Airfare there are generally extra expenses to and from the airport, bag fees, etc.

If you are staying city center, IMO its a hell of a lot easier to take a train to go to a city center than to cab or train to the airport, go through security, take your flight, wait on your bags, then train or cab to your location.

But as you said every trip really is generally different.

the show in London is at Royal Albert Hall so we will definitely stay somewhere close to that. Does that change anything about train or flight from AMS?

For the center of London the train is more convienient when you consider you get to Schipol 2 hrs ahead of time and then land in London and have to get a train to the center which takes 20 minutes from Heathrow but with a cheap flight you are likely landing at Stanstead which is over an hour away. I'm finding trains for $136 if you book in advance.

It’s really about your preference. There are overnight options, takes 12 hours but you could sleep/ save a hotel night. But as said if you book a train 3-4 weeks ahead of time it looks to be under $125. You could also train somewhere 1-2 hours away like Brussels, stay a day, and then train the rest of the way. Add a little chaos to your travels.

Are you taking check on bags? That will add to your flight expenses but generally doesn’t to trains.

no we will travel light…as we can considering it’s October hopefully not too cold. All in all despite the hectic schedule the flights/trains/etc for a trip like this are pretty affordable. everything I’m seeing is 100 bucks or so each leg once we get there, not bad
