Don't know what state they were in but there are regulations that you can only take 25 shotshells while water fowling. I take at least two boxes when I hunt, and some friends take three. I'm usually the guide and have to chase and shoot crippled birds so I could easily shoot 5-10 rounds just trying to retrieve cripps. I mean if you can't kill 5 ducks with a box of shells, you need to go to the range or stop sky busting. Not going to every state wildlife website to see how many this do, but didn't know it was a reg in some states.

Back in the day, I duck hunted with these guys that were brothers. One said he only needed 5 shells to get his 5 ducks. I still can't believe the guy only brought 5 shells to the blind and killed 5 ducks.

Also a ton of public land only allows 25 pp to decreae skybusters and tree toopers.

a lot of it is mental and discipline

My dad started me on a single shot 20ga

At 8-10 years old I was hitting at >75% clip. It makes you choose your shot

When I moved to a pump 20 I saw that accuracy fall drastically. You know you have another chance if you miss

I duck hunt in a WMA where you can only have 15 shells. It has its pros and cons. It supposedly should cut down on sky busting to ensure the ducks are in range to use your allotment of 15 shells. But it also results in hunters not using their shells to chase cripples. They just let the cripples swim off.

I have also discovered shells hidden in stumps.

My dad was busted for this in southern Illinois in college. I don't remember the details, but him and 2 friends were in a blind or a boat together and one of them had a couple boxes of shells they forgot about somewhere.

Its really not that bad of a law, but you do have to be very careful. How often does one really shoot more than even 15-20 shells for a limit of 5? If you are routinely running out of 25 shells for 5 ducks, you probably need to slow down and rethink some things. But I also get the idea of carrying more than you'll need.

I know some public refuges and WMA’s have this rule. I was told its meant to deter skyblasting

Not one of the Five Shot brothers, but one morning hunting Beouf WMA I killed 3 ducks with two shots. My buddies were skyblasting, so I slipped along the bank of Crew Bayou and two woodducks came flying treetop, right down the middle. One shot and both fell. Little later, I snuck up on a lone gadwall and Arkansawed him.( on the water). When I walked back to my buddies, thier eyes were big as cowpiles!

I absolutely waste more shells trying to finish off wounded ducks than I do shooting at ducks the first time

That’s why I bring two boxes, plus throwing a few to get the dog straightened out on a retrieve.

My cousin used to that. I finally said, why don't you grab a pocket full of golf ball sized rocks at the boat launch? He looked at me like invented electricity.

ETA: Shells were a lot cheaper in the 90's.

Pretty common restriction on public areas. The thinking is it will cut down on sky busting. It doesn't. It probably would IF there was anything more on most public areas but the first flight right at shooting time and the smaller flight around mid-morning. If there were a steady flight of birds, even if they were small numbers of birds,. most people would not sky bust. What happens on most public areas is the birds get antsy when folks start showing up. Some birds will leave, others wait until shooting time....but they are all hyper aware of all the noise that is being made that is followed up by a lot shooting right at day light. Most will be gone from the area within 20 minutes of shooting time and then its a couple of hour wait until any real numbers start showing up again....and by then enough people are picking up and complaining about there being no birds that its difficult to work the mid morning flight. Limiting shells is a good idea in theory...most people never fire 10 let alone 25 on a single public area hunt unless they are shooting before shooting time or doing some serious sky busting....
