Attended the 2nd night show, Wow these guys are still as good if not better than late 80s early 90's. Such perfectionist with their music. Only disappointment was they didn't play Sanitarium!!

Im with you, they're still great live, but no way better. The energy from the Justice shows and Black Album shows was off the charts.

Not sure if you've been to M72 but the setup is quite unique, 4 drum kits as the band moves around the diameter of this 360 degree stage while the show progresses. The energy level is about the same as those good ole days IMO, Black was the last time i saw them

They are playing Lane Stadium (Va Tech) tonight. Pretty cool given the backstory.

So do they open or close with Sandman in Blacksburg tonight? I will be at the Houston show next month.

A philosophical debate.

I won't be there, but the son of a friend is a student and will be there.

They closed Nashville with it. It’s been the closer on the two night shows.

I’m a lifelong Metallica fan but couldn’t care less about Virginia Tech sports.

Is Metallica performing Enter Sandman there the equivalent of Garth Brooks singing Calling Baton Rouge in Tiger Stadium? That’s the impression I get…

Eh. Enter Sandman I would say is a much more prominent part of their intro.

Sorry to break this to you, but there is no way in hell this is true. And that’s not meant as a criticism of Metallica. I saw them at Mile High Stadium in 2017 and they were damn good.

I think you might need to check out Binge & Purge Seattle 1989 though. I saw them in Biloxi nine days before that show and it was quite frankly the greatest concert I’ve ever seen. I’ve seen them numerous times since, and while always good, 1989 Damaged Justice tour is when they were at their absolute peak live.

Not a fan at all of the stage in the middle of the field. I only want to be on ground level for any concert I go to, but from ground level, maybe 25% of the time you can see all the members of the band. There’s definitely times when you can’t see any of them because they’re clear on the other side of the stage. When that’s the case everybody on your side of the stage is just hearing the music but seeing none of them. And around 50% of the time you can see some of them, but not all of them. This does not foster a rowdy and energetic crowd.

With all that said, I may very well be in Atlanta to see them on June 3. My son is obsessed and desperate to go. I’ll definitely look forward to it of course. But there’s no way it can possibly match Biloxi 1989.

To go with your criticism, all of which I agree with, Metallica’s current live guitar tone is the weakest it’s ever been. Where’s the gain?! The tone is flat and damned near clean! I’m not a fan of that. Bring back the Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier!

Agreed. I have said it many times on this site. In the 80's Metallica wasn't a band. They were a machine.

They are still great live today but not even in the same stratosphere as they were in the 80's & early 90s.

I really want to take my son too, but he's only 11. I could be the "cool" dad but my wife is going to say absolutely not.

Honestly, I don't think Metallica's shows are inappropriate in the slightest. I saw them in 2019 and it was pretty much a wholesome show. Papa Het is all about spreading positivity at Metallica shows these days.

Pantera and Suicidal Tendencies? Probably not good experiences for an elementary school student.

It will be fine for an 11 year old. Phil has really toned it down from how he used to be on stage.

Same exact thing for me. I have a friend who took his son around your son’s age to see Metallica. My wife, though? It would’ve been war if I had tried.

Very true. He’s a different animal these days. It was F bombs galore in the 80s, but I think ever since he went through rehab it seems like he doesn’t even drop any F bombs anymore. Nothing wrong with that either.

As it turns out, they evidently teased the intro with the recorded version but actually played it live as the finale.
