Last night, our beloved 13 year old Pit/Lab mix fell and couldn't get back up. Unfortunately, it's probably time to start planning for the coming weeks/month(s) when he's not going to be with us.

This dog has been fantastic- got him as a rescue as a one year old, he's been with our family every minute- in the woods, in the boat, on vacation.

Honestly, probably couldn't have designed a better dog if I was God himself- never needed to be on a leash, don't have a fence at our place- dude goes outside, plays around our couple acres, barks to be let back in. Never wandered off not even once.

When I was hunting in Argentina, the lodge had a GSP and I fell in love with their intelligence. I understand they are nuts (maybe?) as puppies- do you guys know any good breeders that could help me with a mild mannered pedigree, or a GSP rescue?

Paging Wick.

I think he had a litter a year or so ago. He can point you in the right direction regardless.

If Ted (Carencro, LA) has any pups from his stud Ice you’ll have a well bred, intelligent, great family pet who will relentlessly find birds.

We love our GSP she’ll be 5 in July.

Man, you need to realize how much exercise a GSP needs before you get one. The hunting lodge dog probably gets a ton of exercise by the nature of the job it does. I have had family members with a couple of GSPs and they are beautiful dogs, but I don’t believe they get calm until they are old.

We foster for them (11 to date) and rehome them.
Most of the time they are excellent dogs that were given up because people don't understand that they need daily stimulation.
My suggestion is to file to be a foster so you can understand more the work they need.
Between 6mos and 3yrs they are velociraptors, then they are amazing.
Some have super high prey drive, others not, but all love their people and want to be with them a lot.
Very trainable if you put in some work.
High energy, but can easily be crate trained, and left out alone in the house in time.
If you like to hike, walk, run, bike, or be outdoors, they will love you, and you them.
TX GSP Rescue does TX, LA, & OK, and there are always dogs available for $300-400 depending on the age.
The fosters will be fixed though, that is a condition of adopting them, just so you know.
The process to foster and adopt is simple, and I will be happy to explain more.
