Here’s a story for you. Years ago when my daughter was young, maybe 6 or 7, but not very young, we had out first father/daughter “fight”.

My daughter had plenty of dolls before that age, but she was never really interested in playing with them. Not all girls play with dolls, even girlie girls, and certainly not to the same degree.

She saw that some friends at school all got these expensive brand, American Girl dolls, which sold for over $100 and they came with lots of expensive accessories. She asked for one for her brithday or Christmas, I dont remember which.

I objected, softly. I said, hey you dont even play with dolls and this one is soo expensive. Wouldn’t you want something else that you’ll actually play with? This is a waste of money.

I thought this might just be a situation of you wanting to fit in with the rich kids. Lets talk about that, yada yada. I sensed my first real opportunity to implant some Christian, non-materialist values in my child, as only a father can.

She cried and pouted, and my wife went and bought the doll over my objections. I dont know if my daughter learned any lessons from that episode, but I will add that she never played with that doll, not even once, after the first day.

So, are dolls really ever a NEED?
