Thinking of renting a house on fort Morgan, but a little concerned about having to take ferry to get there (we would all be driving from Nola).

This would be a holiday weekend and I’ve read ferry is first come first serve and to arrive early.

Anyone go to fort Morgan regularly and take the ferry? Is there a queue on a holiday weekend? Would love to avoid going through mobile to get there.

If it’s Friday afternoon before Memorial weekend, you’re gonna be waiting. Definitely arrive early or just drive.

Why not just drive the whole way and not take the ferry?

You were saying you would love to avoid mobile, but even with the tunnel traffic more times than not it’s going to be faster than driving. So if for some reason, you just want to take the ferry then yes you’re likely gonna have to wait but you’ll accomplish your goal, even though it will likely take longer to get there.

On our way to Fort Morgan, we drive thru Mobile, over the bay, and then down south. This is mainly bc we usually stop at a grocery store on our way to the beach and Fort Morgan doesn’t have a lot of options. It’s also harder to time out the ferry when driving a long distance beforehand. It’s no fun driving a few hrs and then waiting another hour for the ferry if you barely miss it.

If we do the ferry, it’s on the way back to NOLA when we’re able to time it out better so we’re not waiting that long. Plus, it’s at the beginning of the trek so the kids aren’t as antsy.

This seems like earned wisdom.

Last trip down, Fort Morgan had just a Dollar General (although decently stocked) and a small store next to Sassy Bass with a few basic provisions. For a real grocery store, it was a 20+ minute drive to the Rouse's in Gulf Shores.

There's a Greer's grocery market just off I-10 exit #4 in Grand Bay. It's a relatively small grocery but you'll be able to get 90% of the basic grocery items you'll need for the entire stay there.

There's also a hidden gem seafood market right next to the Greers called "Southern Shells". Super nice young owner and the place is like a mini version of Joe Patties seafood market (P'cola) or Sexton's seafood (Destin) where you can get pound(s) of fresh shrimp, fish, etc which you can also call and order ahead of time that will be ready to pick up on your way thru. They sell fresh seafood as is but they'll also steam/season/flavor shrimp, fish, shellfish, etc upon request for you as well. If you're hungry and want to actually eat lunch there or pick up something to go they offer that as well. If you go the lunch route I highly recommend their fried shrimp po boy served lightly glazed with an aiolo sauce. It's the best shrimp po boy I've ever had outside of the NOLA area
