Family of 5 kids age 13,8,3. Going to Glacier NP but had Banff and Yellowstone also on our summer vacation. Dates have changed and trip is shorter now. 3 days in Banff or 4 days at Yellowstone and Grand Teton? As a family we like moderate hikes and kids are very adventurous.
Yellowstone I have 1 night at entrance Yellowstone hot springs (tent camping). Theodore Roosevelt lodge rented a couple nights and Grant campground rented the other night. Staying in Dubois, WY after day in GT NP.
Banff we would camp 3 nights at 2 Jack main campground.

Have been to both and would say that both are great, but if it were me, I'd choose Banff. Banff will be a little tougher to get to (assuming you'd fly to Calgary and then rent a car) and will have to deal with passport/customs, etc. Will make for a long trip. However, the park will likely be less crowded than Yellowstone. Yellowstone, while beautiful, gets incredibly crowded during the summer. It can involve sitting in lines in the park while in your car and for me, that can take the feeling away of being in nature.
Both will offer a variety of hikes so I'm sure you can find one that suits your party's skill level in either park. I saw more wildlife in Banff but that may have just been chance. Either way, enjoy!

Will be driving to Banff. We start in Kansas City and finish in Kansas City.

The further north you go in the Rockies the more spectacular the scenery, so Banff wins there, but for the unusual: geysers, hot springs, mud pots, wildlife - Yellowstone is one of my favorites. As mentioned, crowds are an issue at Yellowstone, but Banff is busy too. If you go to Banff, go up to Icefield Parkway and go out on the glacier. Usually, I would say to go on to Jasper, but after the fire destroyed most of the town of Jasper last year, I'm not sure of the status of the NP up there. Also, on the drive up from Glacier you'll pass Waterton International NP (most park access is from Canada, but the park spans both sides of the border).

I agree with the scenery in Banff and areas around. We went three years ago and going back in July, but staying in Canmore this time.

Been to Yellowstone and Banff. Going back to Banff at the end of this month for 2 weeks. Done Waterton after GP and enjoyed it as well. Going to Jasper and Ice fields this trip.

I'm curious if Banff is going to be worse this year with Canadians encouraging each other not to take vacations to the states and stay in Canada.

Banff NP or Yellowstone
I would take Banff over the rest in terms of scenic beauty. I think the Icefields Parkway is North America’s most scenic road. But if a Yellowstone trip already includes Glacier NP and GTNP (plenty of mountain terrain to be seen in those places by car and foot), I think I would lean in that direction - especially if this is a once in a lifetime trip.
Yellowstone is magnificent. Don’t get me wrong. But Yellowstone is also “Yellowstone.” It is like the Mona Lisa, Wrigley Field, Eiffel Tower, and Empire State Building of national parks. It’s one of those places you just have to see in your lifetime if you’re a traveler.

Banff.
The Canadian Rockies just swallow our Rockies here.
Panoramic views like no other.
Well maybe the Alps but I digress.

I don’t know much about Banf but I’ve been to Glacier sit and the agenda Tetons and. Yellowstone. Glacier is Excellent for day hikes and/or backcountry permits and has the Swiss craggy scenery that Bamf and The Tetons have. Yellowstone is an American icon and much more interesting to kids and has alot of wildlife and hiking but not the craggy mountain scenery. With young kids I’d do Yellowstone and the Tetons.
