Today in History: April 27

1296 Edward I defeats the Scots at the Battle of Dunbar.

1509 Pope Julius II excommunicates the Italian state of Venice.

1773 British Parliament passes the Tea Act.

1865 The Sultana, a steam-powered riverboat, catches fire and burns after one of its boilers explodes. At least 1,238 of the 2,031 passengers--mostly former Union POWs--are killed.

1950 South Africa passes the Group Areas Act, formally segregating races.

1975 Saigon is encircled by North Vietnamese troops.

1989 Protesting students take over Tiananmen Square in Beijing, China.

2020 Global confirmed cases of COVID-19 pass 3 million with the death toll at 205,000. US has 1/3 of all new cases.

Born on April 27

1737 Edward Gibbon, historian (The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire).

1791 Samuel F.B. Morse, inventor of the telegraph and the code.

1822 Ulysses S. Grant, Union general during the American Civil War, 18th President of the United States (1869-1877).

JOTD
An American spy is in Soviet Russia, digging up information on a powerful Russian politician. He finds him in a bar, walks in dressed in Russian attire, pretending to be Russian. Everybody in the bar looks at him, but he keeps his cool. He orders a drink and walks to the politician...

"Greetings, comrade." says the spy, but before he could finish his sentence, the Russian says, "I think you are American spy."
The spy is alarmed, but being a skilled, trained, spy, he says, "That is not true! I am the proudest Soviet there is! I can sing the anthem more beautifully than any other man in the country!"
He then proceeds to sing the Soviet anthem, so melodically and beautifully, that everybody in the bar cheers.
"Very good, very good!" says the politician. "But I still think you are spy."
The man continues to keep his cool.
"I am a historian! I can tell you everything about this glorious country!"
He then spends about two hours recounting the Revolution, the Great Patriotic War, about how superior to the Russia is in terms of technology compared to America and makes a great argument about how communism is beneficial to society.
"Amazing! You are skilled!" says the politician.
The spy smirks.
"But I still think you American spy."
The spy is getting frustrated, but still unfazed.
He replies, "I am good drinker, a true Russian! Let us drink, and see who can come out top!"
The bar turns its attention to the politician and the spy, who are now in a drinking contest.
The bartender serves drink after drink of vodka.
After about an hour of drinking, the politician nearly passes out, unable to hold as much liquor as the spy, to a resounding cheer amongst the bar.
In the midst of the cheering, the Russian politician gets up, smiling, and in a slurred speech, repeats, "You are good, you are good... but I still think you are spy."
The American spy, piss drunk, loses his skill and gives up.
"Okay, you got me. I am an American. But what made you think that way, after all this time?"
The Russian politician replies, "There aren't many black people in Russia."

That looks much like Crab Island in Destin but not as manyboats (and trees)

I'm sure the trashyness level is equivalent though

I

Its a pass that was created (re opened) by the hurricanes last year. It is an amazing place all the way through. The video does not do it justice

It is Sarasota Florida baw. Its not even close to being Crab island. Not even remotely close

If it were jacksonville or Miami, then maybe but not here. I would say it is more on the boring side for some. Just laid back.

Morning all!
Waiting another couple of hours until my 34 hour reset is over and I can head back out on the roads for the final stretch to hometime. Been out since Feb 8th and this is likely going to be the final time I stay out for 3 months at a time. I'm likely heading back to the 6 weeks on/1 week off rotation until it's time for me to bid adieu to the OTR trucking industry.

I am not familiar with that one. Is that also known as the Marathon sand bar?

Good Morning Humans
Happy Sunday!

Nice looking place Lanier. Perfect for blasting some NSR

This morning will be spent cleaning and waxing the boat. It’s about time to get ready for the summer.

Then the afternoon will be primed for some nap roulette. No alarm. Might be down 30 minutes. Maybe 4 hours. No one knows.

Then a few other odds and ends to get ready for Monday.

Y’all get it done.

Boot key harbor is near Marathon and the mooring field has 268 balls. More of an anchorage area for staying overnights than daily party.

Got ya. We took the boat down there a couple times in March the last couple years. Stayed in Marathon once, Duck key, and Cudjoe key the second time. Loved both trips. Did the Marathon sand bar and the Islamorada Sand bar. Most just boated around (2 couples) and fished. Loved it down there. Boaters paradise

But it is shallow and the bottom is not sand.
