While I know hypotheticals are not a thing, let's be perfectly honest here: had this occurred in the four-team playoff era, Ohio State likely has a new coach for 2025. The expanded playoff absolutely saved the Buckeyes and rendered moot the biggest upset in history of the Ohio State-Michigan rivalry.

Every team that wins the CFP will have a run of top teams to beat. They didn’t win their division or conference.

So? From bowl ties to the BCS to the four team playoff the twelve team playoff, the criteria for winning a title has changed a lot through the years.

I don’t hear anyone saying they weren’t the best team, though.

Ohio State's longest winning streak last year was 5. Pitt beat that by two games and finished 7-6

They’re so mad that everyone has forgotten them not even 3 months later.

It doesn't say it's the greatest team. It says it's the "greatest run." They did win 4 playoff games. No one has ever done that.

They're not the greatest team. They probably weren't the best team last season. But in the expanded playoff structure of all sports now, the best team doesn't always win it all. The hottest, or sometimes, luckiest (in terms of matchups) does.

I bet the majority of Ohio State seniors would trade that “greatest run” for a single victory over Michigan.

In fairness they don’t have divisions to win

But it’s hard to immortalize a team that finished 4th in their conference

The best team doesn’t always win it all regardless of the format.

Doubtful.

People big mad.

They won 4 playoff games by double digits against 4 top 10 teams. They were up 34-0 against the #1 team in the country.

They dominated. It doesn’t mean they were the best team ever but they had an incredible playoff run

Didn't even play in their conference title game and got absolutely embarrassed at home by 6-5 Daddy. BEST EVER

Yes they did. They left little doubt who was the best team in the country last year. The only knock on them is that awful showing AT HOME to Michigan.

Were they the best team during the whole regular season, no. Were they the best team when things were clicking in the playoffs, yes. Both titles that Ohio State has won in the playoff era, were times when they shouldn’t and wouldn’t have been in a title game. They got to both title games because of expansions.

You're still 1-1 vs. Oregon that season...

So Ducks, print the Nike shirts! In fact, Day told his players in the locker room before walking out into Autzen, "leave no doubt".... before promptly losing.
