Have you ever donated a car?

If so who did you donate it to and what was your experience? I've got a car that's maybe worth 3k (and that's a big maybe) and I'm 50/50 on the transmission being cooked. It would be 5k for a rebuild alone. Maybe 1 or 2 if I did it myself. But time is a commodity I no longer have to trade. What kind of tax write off did you get?

IRS clamped down on this a couple of years ago and it isn’t as easy as it used to be. Might get a better answer on Money Board?

I donated at least 2 but it was over 15 years ago. Not much in the write-off department I would guess, especially since the new standard deduction was raised. It’s a very easy process as long as you have title and everything lined up.

Also about 15 yrs ago. My FIL worked at a child protective services agency of some sort. They took it. I grabbed a rather favorable value off Kelly Blue Book for the deduction. Whoever ended up with the car wrecked it pretty quickly I heard. Was a 'house mom' or something at one of the homes.

Sell it to carmax for 800 and call it a day.

I did this with a pathfinder.

Every warning light was on.
Four wheel drive quit locking.
Three nice dents.
180k miles

I said frick it. This won’t even be a worth farm only truck. Gimme 800 just to get it off my hands.

They wanted the Thule roof rack as I was taking it off after they paid me.

I said no.

If you want to get the car off your hands, then this is an option for you. If you can still get use out of the truck or car, then keep it.

See IRS Pub 526 and 561 for guidance on which charities you donate to and how to determine the FMV of the items. FMV is usually the value for your vehicle as a Private Sale on a site such as KBB or Edmunds. Keep in mind the standard deduction for MFJ is $14,600 so your total deductions must exceed that amount before any benefit.

No help… I looked into it once but ended up selling an explorer with about 280k miles to a junk yard dude for 600$. Just wanted to get rid of it. The engine/transmission was still good but the suspension was shot and frame was rusted. Any bump felt like an IED explosion

Thanks for the heads up! I wanted to go this route but the wife wouldn't let me make a potentially ethically questionable decision of selling a car with a blown transmission. Women, amirite? To be honest I don't think it would have made it the 19 miles to the CarMax. Input shaft seal was cooked and leaked like a sieve.

We're donating it to cars for kids and they're picking it up tomorrow.

My son toasted the engine in an F150, local wrecker yard (Shriever Auto Parts) came pick it up on a flatbed and gave him $500 cash. A few phone calls might put some money in your pocket.
