Why is this a metric to measure the U.S. economy?

It’s Not. That’s why this is so funny

54% is owned by the top 1% of Americans.
Minimum networth is $13.7 million.
Stop with the communism Bernie.
Not billionaires.

The U.S. should base its economy on stocks because 75% of people who own them owe no loyalty to this country?

The same people who own these are the ones who own the media companies too

Wonder if Trump owns any equities? Who did you vote for?

One reason is luxury goods. When people with nice retirement accounts or investment portfolios are doing good luxury goods sell more. Like boats, cars, RVs, vacations, etc. Other than that it doesn’t have much affect on people’s day to day spending.

Last breakdown that I saw showed who owned stocks by net worth.
The top 10% own nearly 90% of stocks held by US citizens, the top 50% own 100% of the stock held by US citizens and the top 1% own 50% of all stocks held by US citizens. So 50% of Americans own zero stocks with 1% owning 50%.
I guess we could assume 50% of Americans couldn't care less about the equities market meltdown.
