Airline bookings for international travel with multiple cities

Any recommendations for the best way to book? Looking at a holiday trip to Italy and returning from Paris. I'm a noob to this sort of travel so I'm not sure of the best way to book. I don't travel enough to have miles but I have an old delta skymiles account that exists from 20 years ago. Should I book directly with Delta or use a travel site like hopper or expedia? 4 of us traveling all family.

Search multi-city on Google Flights then book direct with the airline or a partner airline if the partner airline has a better fare. Don't book flights through a third party.

Definitely don't do this.

I’ve booked multi city flights on AA.com by using the advanced search. Delta and United probably have those too. I would start by using google flights to check rates for your travel, then go to the airline with best flight times and rates.

They definitely have the capability and are reasonably easy to use just hate having to use the Google flights to search and watch for the fares to do what they will. I’m terribly impatient

I use google flights for current fares and to check what’s available by different airlines. It’s the quickest way for me to determine how many different airlines fly to my destination and best flight schedule. Then I go to the best suited airlines website.

OP, believe this. A third party will book you on different airlines that don't have interline agreements (you really want to have to get your bags at JFK, only to leave the secure area, check in, and check your bags again?) this is one downside. Here's the basic tip, the third party can't do shite for you, other than have someone offshore call Delta or Air Serbia and start the conversation with, "on behalf of our mutual customer," and can't actually solve problems.
And stay within the same alliance (Star Alliance, OneWorld, or SkyTeam) if at all possible. Lufthansa knows how to call Turkish, AA knows how to call Iberia, etc.)
What cities are you talking about?

Mulit-city function on Skyscanner worked great for me.

Starting in Rome, over to Florence, train to Paris and home from there.

Two routes:
1) Use Multi-City, select the dates and times and city parings and fly on a singular airline alliance (OneWorld, SkyTeam, etc.)
2) Buy each leg as a one way and fly the cheapest airline
US-Italy
Italy-France
France-US

Can I ask why, instead of just flying out of an Italian airport

I've traveled open jaw through Europe many times
I usually start with Google Flights to get an idea of the best routes/days/cost
Then go directly to the airline site to book. Usually under the "Advanced Search" area of an airline's website you can select "Multi-City" as an option
Bon Voyage!

The train from Rome to Florence is between $20 and $80, and takes under 1h45m.
ITA Matrix (Google Flights)
picked this as the lowest cost itinerary, including a flight between Rome and Florence, which IMO would be a bigger PITA than just taking the train. I picked a rando date to leave in June, with a couple of days in each city.
$1032 RT per person with a 55m (move with speed, sir, the flight to Rome will start boarding ten minutes after your flight from MSY hits the gate) connection in ATL. Fly back from Paris with a stop in Deeeetroit on Delta.
Book it on Delta.com . It's probably basic economy, (fare code E,O) but you can figure that out and purchase bags or do seat selection.

So you want me to back track to Italy after spending 3 days in Paris?

I'm asking why you are going to Paris as well. Why not just fly out of Milan or Venice and save Paris for a trip that is for Paris / France

I see, this is me avoiding sarcasm and trying my best not to just be rude. Because it’s our trip and we’re doing it the way WE want to.

How long is the trip? My son is doing about the opposite starting tomorrow night. Business class to CDG from IAD for 3 days in Paris. Then to Venice for 3 days and finish in Rome for 3 days. Then fly home.

Have done this multiple times
The best cost wise has been Google multicity there and return.
New Orleans - Rome (say 4/1)
Paris - New Orleans (4/10)
Then book a one way
Rome - Paris (4/5)
I'll shuffle it around because sometimes one is cheaper like my current trip going to Amsterdam first and fly home from Lisbon as opposed to Lisbon and then from Amsterdam

Our will be very similar. I think 4 days instead of 3…
