Son wants a used aluminum boat

I don’t know anything about getting one so here I am.
He’s 16, has saved up some money and is determined on getting one. He talks about finding one with and without papers, like that’s a big factor. Something about registering it. Looking for something like a 14/32, 14/36, etc.
He’s got a kayak so he’s used to being on the water in general, and has been out on his friend’s boat.
What things do we need to consider in getting one, what to look for in a motor, etc.

The best kind of boat, is a best friends boat.

He will need papers on the boat/trailer in order to register both and avoid any hassle from WLF. He will also need proof of taking boaters safety course (online class thru LA WLF).
As far as the actual boat goes, they are a dime a dozen. I would encourage you to find one that is welded, not riveted. Any size motor will push the boat just depends on how fast he’s wanting to go. Tracker is probably the most popular brand.
If I remember correctly, the boat safety course also has a checklist of things he will need to keep in the boat such as lifejacket for each person on board a flare emergency Horn, etc. all of which may be inspected by a WLF agent at any time

I'd also tell him that life jacket needs to stay on at all times with the motor running and the kill switch always attached to him. Non negotiable conditions.

Power to the meeple
If he is looking for entry level first one with a trailer, boat and 25hp tiller that runs good I might be able to part with one

Width matters in a small rig. Wider the better for stability. I’d shop for an older model 2 stroke motor. Yamaha, Tohatsu, or Mercury will be fine. I’d stay away from Johnson/Evinrude motors due to parts shortage.

Way more fun to have your own and go and do what you want, when you want.

Agreed on both. Old 1430 I had was squirrelly as hell and we all know a 16yr old is going to push the limits on a boat. For the motor, let him know that there's a YouTube video for almost every repair he could need. He'll learn quick.

If it flies, floats or fricks - rent it.

quote:My dad had three aluminum boats when I was in high school. One 16' Ouachita that was rigged like a bass boat with a 20 hp Mercury. The one below is not it, but really similar. We ran trot lines and yo yo's on D'Arbonne with it.
Way more to have your own and go and do what you want, when you want.

We also had a 12' john boat and a little two seat 6' one with a 5hp Mercury on it. We quit using the 12 ' one when we got the 16' one. We kept the little 6' boat in a boathouse at the Kosciusko country club. Pulled a guy using two skis with it one day.

Agree with the width comments, a 14x30 is gonna be like a big pirogue stability wise.

Believe it or not, my friends and I pulled a wake board behind a 14ft. Aluminum V-Hull with an 18hp Evinrude during our teenage years. The wake board was homemade that we used 3/4" plywood to make it. Only problem was that everytime you would wipe out, the plywood board would dive down.

Thanks for all the helpful replies, all. Sounds like you all had some fun times on the water that he’s itching to have. I didn’t have that opportunity growing up so hopefully he can.

14x48 with 25 2 stroke merc is all he needs.

Get a nice comfortable one NRS jacket they makes some nice ones,
Under power the boat if it can take a 30 hp dont, go 15-20 and change the prop to go even slower. My duck boat is a weldbuilt 1536 with a 25 hp 2 stroke yamaha & it will zip down the river with me and the hound 2 to 3 guys not bad.

Welded, ( no riveted), high sides, Wider better,54”. Needs to be registered , if not he can get creative but I wouldn’t my son learning the ways. Same goes for the trailer, registered. Boaters ed mandatory by law. Insurance a must.
Knowing I’ll be in your position 8yrs from now, I could go on and on. I would say the OB is here to help and please keep us updated!!

Boats are great, for those you use them regularly....and can be a money pit for sure.

I’ve got one I’m considering selling. It’s an Alweld 1648 with flotation pods added to the transom. It currently has a 50hp 2 stroke Yamaha on the back. I was building it out to be a tower boat but life got in the way (currently set up with a brand new sea star hydraulic steering). I also have an atlas micro jacker jack plate. I recently painted the interior with tuff coat boat paint/anti skid. Trailer is a 2017, great condition. Title and registration for boat and trailer. Email me for pictures and can talk price. Do not under any circumstances buy anything used without clear title papers. Boat hull, motor and trailer.
Good luck, sounds like a good kid.

The wider the better if he will be fishing out of it. Don’t wait for the perfect boat because it’ll never happen. Find one with solid bones and expect to put some money into it doing upgrades and fixes as you go.
These days I am so busy with life that I haven’t fished in a few years but my favorite memories are when I had a small bateau and relatively no responsibilities. It’s like getting your first truck all over again.
