This is what happens when a bunch of Louisiana cronies are running things. Good riddance to that dump of a meet

God I love the sport but it is in a complete nose dive and no one seems to care. What a damn shame.

Yes it is. Wait and see how many outfits won't return. Trainers like coming from KY because of the track surface, NOLA food, partying, etc. However, its the owners who make those choices. They're not signing up for paying for shipment fees, and a reduction of purses. I've said for a while this was going to happen. Turfway will turn into Kentucky Downs, ie, field sizes. Will average 10-12 horses per race. Wait

And where do they go? If Stronach sells off Gulfstream and God forbid Santa Anita that leaves Oaklawn with no turf and Kentucky and NYRA, which at least is making some investment with the redo of Belmont. Louisiana had a stable industry due primarily to the breeders incentives. Texas has sucked every since outlawing ADW's around 15 years ago.
As a hard-core player for years it has just sucked the life out of the players and ultimately turned them off from the sport. I mean they even tore down beautiful Arlington for the Bears deal which is now in jeopardy. So disappointing!!!!

Numbers are Public. Fairgrounds makes $4M in revenue a month from just their 600 Slot Machines. That's $222 in revenue per machine per day.
If incremental OpEx costs for the Casino are $2.5M a month (which would be high), the Fairgrounds can't take any of the $18M a year and reinvest into the Purses of the 91 days a year? That is what it was originally for.
Rooting for them to fail so the Fairgrounds Swamp can be drained.

As someone unfamiliar, what are the HHR machines? The article isn’t clear as to what they are or are used for.

Imagine being such a degenerate you lose money on races that already happened

It's more like slot machines. Virtually the same thing. Oaklawn, Kentucky Downs, Turfway, Ellis, and Churchill (off site) all have them. It's why the purses are solid

The FG needs one owner just like Oaklawn and KY Downs. You know how much cash is shipped up to Louisville from FG and the other OTBs with slots/poker? ALOT. CD never made new additions until they acquired the FG. Until someone approaches FG with an offer that suits CDI, it's not for sale. Did I mention Jazzfest?

I agree and thanks for adding that. I hate the neglect by Churchill on Fairgrounds.

Phil Bauer told me a few weeks ago that he won't be back. Mr Rigney (his private trainer) believes there is money to be made at Turfway, without shipping costs, etc. It comes down to drawing in, and the condition book. Kinda hard for these outfits that have KY or open company horses, and the FG is writing more state bred rats with more purse money. Thats a bullshite state law.

The fairgrounds is truck stop casino that happens to have horses the run by the slot machines. It is a shame but that slot revenue is all they care about.

Don't all La. tracks have slots?
Posted on 3/27/25 at 10:06 am to VernonPLSUfan
Yes. Only the FG is owned by Churchill.

I used to go down to Lafayette to old Evangeline Downs a lot in the 80's. Knew a couple of owners, one an asst. DA, that helped me win lots of money. Used to drink beer and eat barbecue in the barns between races. Definitely an instance of having friends in high places. I'd feel lucky to know a dog catcher now. Great times that I really miss.

If you are interested in getting into the game, I'd suggest an ownership group. Don't know what kind of budget, but there are plenty 5k claimers in LA. Plus, there is a bonus restricted to state breds. Happy to help
