Nobody can convince me this happened.

Don’t we see him blow his brains out in the movie?

He was allowed to off himself. His room was guarded.

No, you only see him put a gun in his mouth and then a lightning strike at the courthouse.

I never understood why Markinson blew his brains out before testifying? Why not take the stand, bring Jessup down, then die with a little dignity?

As Pitch Meeting would say, "to make the movie happen".

The best I can come up with is:
Markinson’s dilemma is the movie.
He was horribly guilt ridden and felt utterly trapped in a moral and ethical conflict of which there was no possible escape or happy resolution.
Taking down Jessup would mean betraying his beliefs, brining shame to the Corps, and essentially making the nation weaker. Of course, it was also still the right thing to do.

Studio Exec: So how does Col Jessup survive this trial that the JAG has stacked against him?
Writer: Oh, super easy, barely an inconvenience. Markinson is going to kill himself before the trial.

I never understood why they didn't try to pin the code red on him after his death. I feel like that is what would happen in real life.

Because Airmen Cecil and O’Malley were going to say it was Jessup who doctored the flight logs.
