Looking to take a fall trip up to North Carolina / Tennessee in the fall someplace different. We have been to Blue Ridge, GA and the towns around already. WE also have been to Asheville Brevard, Bryson CIty and certainly don't want to go to the Gatlinburg area. Looking for a small, fun town that has a bit of outdoor activities like hiking and things like that. I was thinking about Highlands or Cashiers, NC but dont know much about it. Thanks for any input.

We've grown fond of the Blue Ridge Parkway in general and we've visited friends many time in Banner Elk, NC, Grandfather Mountain, and surrounding villages.

The 2nd & 3rd weeks of October are pretty colorful and the town hosts the Wooly Worm Festival one of those weekends, featuring a little art and crafts but the entire area is loaded with beauty.

Photographers (including myself) have risked life and limb getting this shot and a lot of waterfalls in the area.

1. Look at Highlands or Cashiers. Tons of hiking, waterfalls, nice shops/restaurants.

2. Equally as fun would be the Boone/Blowing Rock area.

We used to take the kids to that area every fall. Great time. Catch the Ghost Train around Halloween time.

I second Boone/Blowing Rock. Really nice area. If you're going in the fall, try to get to an App State game. Also feels like an actual authentic place vs Highlands which is just rich second-homers.

We spent a week with the kids and another family in a rental in the mountains between Cashiers and Highlands.

There's tons to do around there whether you're talking about sliding rock, hikes, waterfalls, fishing, ziplines, etc... the kids really enjoyed it and it was incredibly peaceful. Both towns are beautiful but walking around Highlands is enjoyable in and of itself.

You really can't go wrong with Blowing Rock/Boone. Lots of walk-able shopping and eating and surround by tons of hiking and other mountain activities.

Not to hijack the thread, but we will be staying in downtown Asheville as our base for a week in mid-May.

Have plans now for:

- The Biltmore is already on the list for a day
- Planning on driving the Blue Ridge Parkways (north) for a day
1) Any other day trips (hiking, waterfalls, parks, rivers lakes, etc.) from our base in downtown Asheville would be appreciated.
2) Places in Asheville for dinner in the evening would be nice too.

We did Asheville a few years ago and really enjoyed the drive to Brevard where we caught Hwy276 (Pisgah Hwy) and drove that up to the Blue Ridge parkway. You can see Looking Glass Falls which is along Hwy 276, drive a few miles further north after and the is sliding Rock, which is exactly what it sounds like. You can slide down a rock the is flowing with creek water into a natural pool. Proceed further up Hwy 276 and there is a place called "Cardle of Forestry", which is a tour you can do which was very interesting details about forestry. Check to see if it is open, i believe it is temprarily closed.
Proceed a few more miles up to the Blue Ridge Pkwy and head north on the pkwy. A nice place to have lunch is Pisgah Inn. The food was decent but the dinig room views were awesome. I dont' recall if they take resevations, but if not get there early enough where the wait will not be so bad.
Stop and different overlooks along the way and there are many hiking trails along the way. You can then exit off of the pkay on the South side of Asheville and return back to your base or continue on the pkwy.

We also had dinner at Sunset Terrace at the Omni Grove Park Inn. It was a great dinner at sunset. Get there early and enjoy the hotel grounds which was beatiful.

Can't go wrong with Highlands however Boone, Blowing Rock, Lake Lure areas are great. Black Mountain is also a great area.

Very nice BUT the area is home to "elite" folks from Atlanta year round. Not a bad thing BUT it can be off putting....there are a lot of airs put on in the area. Not a deal breaker by any stretch but if you don't like Buckhead people it might be a lot to take. They are far easier to take away from Atlanta but they will be there in droves year round....
