Ross Dellenger article on LSU’s NIL Fund

Looks like we got our own billionaire now
For years, LSU’s NIL fund trailed its SEC peers. But this winter, after more losing, Brian Kelly & his new GM convinced donors to fund a $10M+ front-loading effort. How a Bay Area billionaire & NFL software system kept LSU alive: “We needed to pay more.”
Episcopal guy who went to Dartmouth and lives in the Bay Area. Can never take the Baton Rouge of the dude.

Glad to see it but it’s a damn shame college football has come to this.

We can have an unlimited budget, but it’s still BK who has to prepare these guys

That was a loooong article. Some interesting stuff. Looks like we didn’t spend much the last 3 years and it showed. Glad we are upping the money so maybe we can compete

the football program’s booster-backed NIL collective budget trailed many within its own conference.

They didn’t have enough money.
People used to get destroyed for saying stuff like this on here...

he cash flow — a majority of it from three to five donors — helped deliver a 16-man, top-ranked transfer portal class in the country
People don't realize that there are very few people that actually have the power to make a difference financially. This is relevant when people talk about firing McMahon. If these 3-5 people don't want to put up the money, it's not going to happen.

You can track a freshman who is going to be your third stringer. Well, he’s only getting $125,000 or $85,000.
Damn

distribution formula: 75% to football ($13.5 million); 15% to men’s basketball ($2.7 million); 5% to women’s basketball ($900,000); and 5% to all other sports ($900,000).
Wild that our baseball team is going to get a fraction of what the women's basketball team gets

We tried to do NIL the right way when it was introduced and got left behind. Thank A&M, Oregon, and others for making it pay for play.

Right. College football is a big business and private equity has taken notice. At some point there will be a return on investment.
The Michigan Wolverines brought to you by Oracle.
The Fighting Tigers of LSU brought to you by Microsoft.

It was always pay for play, even with LSU.

“It’s fascinating,” Kelly says. “You start with your initial capital outlay at key positions: quarterback, cornerback, defensive end. You can track a freshman who is going to be your third stringer. Well, he’s only getting $125,000 or $85,000. So if he’s getting offered $1 million to transfer, there’s nothing to talk about. If Miami wants to give our third-stringer $1 million, good luck to them.”
Money ball.

Originally, it was not. Players had NIL deals with Gordon, car dealerships, local restaurants and advertised on social media, commercials, and appearances. There’s very little of that now because NIL is a total sham and the NCAA can’t do a damn thing about it.

Spahts are a great American family. They had a tragic loss a couple of years ago, but Holden is a great guy and so are the others.

That’s a pretty good article! Gives some good insight as to what the hell is actually going on

This state of college athletics is terrible.
The NCAA needed to figure this out before it got this far. Now they’re useless.
Ed O’Bannon killed colllege sports, but only because those in charge were myopic and incompetent.

You think Gordon got a bunch more business by spending $2 million on LSU players?
Posted on 3/14/25 at 8:58 am to LSBoosie
I think Gordon has more money than he knows what to do with and just wanted to get involved. The pay for play stuff didn’t really take shape until teams like A&M, Oregon, and Miami were literally signing whoever they wanted out of high school or the portal under the guise of NIL. Everyone else knew they needed to eventually adapt or die.
