It's more likely my wife intercepted it and threw it in the trash.

Ah, the paper catalog. Completely unnecessary in 2025. Yet, when the stars align and I purchase a camp, I will absolutely request one that will live on the back of the toilet. Because some things are timeless.

I was more excited as a kid to get the BPS Master Catalog in the mail than the SI Swimsuit issue. A man (and a boy) has to have his priorities in line. I could not afford much if anything in either publication but I knew what to do with a couple of items in the BPS catalog....

I remember when, for a pretty short period of time, there were some locally owned Bass Pro Shop franchises around. There was one in Sandy Springs and one in Conyers (in metro Atlanta) if memory serves. I think Georgia Outdoors in Sandy Springs may have been one of these as well. There was one in Athens Alabama that I remember and I am pretty certain that at one time Tom Mann's Fish World in Eufaula had a BPS sign out front but I may be wrong about that. It was some kind of thrill to go to one of these stores. They were basic bait and tackle shops that sold some BPS branded gear early on.....only tied to BPS is the loosest of connections but it still seemed like you were going into BPS when BPS was mail order only....

I may be wrong about this BUT I can remember ordering stuff from BPS and having to mail them a check LOL. I do not think they took credit cards, if they did I did not know anyone wealthy enough to have a credit card, and I do not think they took orders over the phone initially, strictly mail order to the best of my knowledge.

I was a kid so I would have to get someone (usually my Dad) to write a check. I would save my money, make my selections like I was picking a bride or investing in real estate, hand the money over to Daddy, he would write the check, I would put it and the order form in the mail and in 6- 8 weeks a package of the most exciting shite ever to be mailed in the USPS would be brought almost to the front door! A lot of times that stuff that took me about 16 weeks to save, order and get delivered would be hung up in the top of a tree or on a stump in water too deep to get at within hours of getting it in the mail and I would have to do it all over again....and it was simply divine LOL.....

BPS catalog, while exciting, had nothing on that Herter's catalog coming in if you were a duck hunter.

As someone else said, I filled out an order form with inventory numbers, mailed it with a check with my parents approval, and weeks later I got my first set of shadow grass long sleeve shirt and pants. The soft, thick fabric ones.

It was probably 1995 or so. We still didn't have internet without long distance dialing from my small CENLA town. And that was slow, spotty and too expensive to spend any time on.

I was a king.

Herters was also very exciting....you are spot on. There were others too....Gander Mountain was kind of Yankee fishing shite....lots of Mepp Spinners.

Speaking of Mepps Spinners....they produced an annual catalog and magazine where the published photos of people and the fish they had caught on Mepps products. LOTS of yankee fish in that thing. It made me think Indiana may be the most exotic and best fishing locale on earth LOL...

I've caught a bunch of rainbow trout in the river and hybrid bass on the lakes using those in North Arkansas.
