Looking to book a trip for family of 4 to NYC - Boston then to Maine. Fly out of BR or NOLA this July. Kids are 11&14 and like sports, outdoors, etc. ideally spend 2 days in NYC, 2 -3 in Boston Area and then on to maine for a Week. we have been to NYC a few times and have that down, but looking for must sees in Boston as well as best area to stay in. Also, easiest way to get from NYC to Boston (assuming train) but will have luggage. where to rent the car to start drive to main? for the Maine portion would
like to stay at or near the water. planning to rent VRbO in Maine. any must see towns/areas of Maine? planning to hit Acadia at some point and then ideally fly back out of Maine. would appreciate any input.

Dude. Just fly into Boston and spend the 2 days you would’ve spent in NYC there especially since you’ve already been to NYC. There’s plenty to do in Boston: Red Sox, touring Harvard or MIT, downtown Boston, Boston Common, day trip to Salem. You could also day trip down into Rhode Island to go check out Gilded Age houses in Newport.
It’s a 5 hour train ride from NYC to Boston on Amtrak so you’ll end up losing a whole day checking out of your hotel, getting to the train, getting to Boston, then getting to your hotel in Boston.
Research your journey from Boston to Maine, rent your car, and take the back roads. New England is gorgeous in the summer and you’ll get a good feel for what it’s like there. You’ll find some really cool towns, farmer’s markets, antique stores, old churches and graveyards, all kinds of historical markers. The easiest place to rent a car would be Logan Airport so you can drop off your car there on your way back.

Agree with above
With kids that age hit Boston and you can stay very busy before going to Maine
Do the Lexington concord tour
A lot of places book fast in Maine for July so better get on it
Up and down coast plenty of things to do and see
Lighthouse boat tours and we did a half day fishing charter - kids would love
Keep in mind Acadia is about three hours from right when you get in Maine coming from Boston and will be crowded that time of year
Stop in Gloucester and rockport mass on way to Maine
Go to lobster pool in rockport
Best place to rent car is airport
Don’t need a car in Boston use the T

You’re trying to do WAY too much in a short amount of time. I’d skip New York based on the information you provided and do 3-4 days in Boston then a week in Maine.

I agree completely. Adding NYC to the mix is too aggressive. I’d stick with Boston and Maine.
Lot of good intel on this board on where to stay and what to do in Boston and up to Maine. Abita and others have a number of posts on this. I’ve also got some comments on the Cape as well but that’s probably better for another trip. Boston/Cape is my favorite place to visit but don’t think I could ever move back. Don’t like it that cold.
As for flights, JetBlue goes direct from MSY to Logan daily. Done that many times and it’s a good flight.
Enjoy the trip.

There is a frequent train from Boston to Portland ME. In Portland I enjoy Beckys Cafe.
Let us know how you like Maine, I haven't gone too far in.

quote:This. Boston to Maine is great trip and shoehorning NYC would really kill that vibe due to loss of time. Also, if you like shopping, hit Freeport Maine on the way to ANP after a day or two in Portland Maine.

Thanks Guys. we are going to switch gears and focus on flying into Boston and spending the rest of the time in Maine… Have about two weeks to work with so would appreciate any other thoughts you may have on Maine.

quote:Acadia NP is great for all levels of hiking. Views like this from easy /moderate trails all day long. Do the Beehive if you can.

Thank you! is there a town that is best to stay in as a base? Ideally a place near the water with restaurants, hiking, beaches near by?

quote:Bar Harbor is the main town in/near the park. We stayed in Southwest Harbor in an Airbnb because it is so peaceful (and less $$) in those woods but the island/peninsular the park is in is not so big that it really matters.

Also, Portland is another town we stayed in and it is a great town to visit as well.
