It does not seem like our kids will ever get the Hollywood we grew up with.

No one has ever gotten the Hollywood their parents grew up with.

Movies don't hold the same cultural place they once did.

For most of the last century movies were sort of the pinnacle of entertainment.

The last 20-30 years there's been an explosion of legitimate competition that didn't exist before.

Entertainment is way more fragmented these days. So the days of movies being this big cultural, touchstone everyone shared isn't coming back.

I am sure people said this in the 80s only thinking about the iconic movies of the 50s, 60s and 70s.

Well, Hollywood doesn't really have entertaining people as their main focus anymore.

Nah.

Society has pendulums.
Maverick was evidence that it’ll swing back after the woke DEI crap is over.

Looks like Trump might get credit with the return of Hollywood also if his policies hold

I would argue that I did in the 1990s.

C'mon man there's tons of movies that come out monthly that have nothing to do with DEI, yet most of you don't show up to support it. People just don't go to the movies anymore. Its not an important thing to most people anymore. And streaming has killed theaters. It's not anymore complicated than that.

The '70s were seen as a sort of renaissance even at the time

That ended w/Jaws and then Star Wars

The golden age of movies died 10 years ago. Movies, like most other media, simply lack the cultural resonance that they once had.

Video games also have a major impact. That industry dwarfs the movie industry in terms of revenue. And has way more interest among young people.

And to your point, people say they want certain types of movies. Original, non-woke, no reboots/remakes/sequels etc... But the entire domestic top 15 movies released last year were some sort of sequel or remake. (If you count Wicked)

No one is willing to take a risk at the theater anymore. People probably watch more movies now than ever before but will only go to the theater to see something they think is more of a safe bet.

This is very false with gen z. They basically don’t watch movies at all, rarely watch tv series other than true crime documentaries or reality garbage. Most of them care more about youtubers and podcasts than they do Hollywood blockbusters.

Yep...there's just too much competition for movies now. Phones are also frying our brains so some people can't even sit still and watch a two hour movie anymore.

Correct and they either suck or no one goes to see them. Maverick renewed hope in the cinema experience. Of course the shutdown drove most of the people there, but it was a spark nonetheless.

Movie makers have a choice. Gamble on making the next great blockbuster hit.

Or for a fraction of the price make three just okay streaming movies.

Adam Sandler figured this out right off the bat and made a fortune.

I know the call for nostalgia is strong and I still enjoy movies today and have liked several best picture winners in the last 10 years but the time of the actual best movies that people actually saw in theaters is over for now.

Oppenheimer was the last mainstream accessible mass appeal winner since RotK.

I know others made money but let’s be honest.

My 18 yo has an impressive Letterbox collection that he and his friends like to grow regularly.

Maybe for some but most of the kids we’re around like film and will ask to watch some classics.

This last year we watched Gladiator, Godfather, usual suspects, Alien, Liberty Valance, Good Will Hunting, Blade Runner (and 2049,) Hoosiers, off the top of my head.

They do their share of YouTubing and what not but we kept him off IG and SnapChat till he was 17 and he thinks TikTok is stupid.

I recently watched The Monkey, The Substance, Nosferatu, becoming led zeppelin, and a complete unknown. Please tell me about all the DEI in these films. TIA

I haven't watched any of those movies. I have heard good things about Noferatu though.
