I just got this for PS5 and find it pretty challenging. I die a lot and admit I’m not good at the combat mechanics. I’m not a big fan of them. Very frustrating and difficult to pull off. Anyone else?

Just keep at it and you'll be fine; if you like to explore and do sidequests you will be OP by the wedding.
Until you get (or steal) better gear, try to avoid combat as much as possible. Try to learn master strike from Tomcat in the nomad's camp ASAP.

Once you learn the master strike from Tomcat, upgrade your armor, and get the Basilard sword you’ll be on easy street until you reach Trosky. Just stick with it, explore, and learn how to pickpocket and unlock chests.

I tried to play through the first one when it was on Game Pass, and it was not good. Videos I've seen of this one make it seem like it plays the same. I really don't understand the appeal.

It's a giant open-world RPG with incredible detail, depth, realism, and great writing. It's kinda hard but not especially punishing.
If you're not a history nerd, I could see how the setting would be boring, and the combat is not the easiest or quickest experience.
The kind of people who like it will really like it, but otherwise, probably better to wait for it to become cheap or temporarily available.

It’s one of the best games I’ve ever played. Right up there with RPG’s like Mass Effect 2, Baldur’s Gate 3, The Witcher 3, Chrono Trigger etc

I've watched some clips of it and it looks hilarious.
Unintentional, but hilarious nonetheless.

Oh I loved the setting of the first area of the first game, but the combat controls were really bad. I finally figured out how to beat some bandits in the first area and then I got down the road to a castle and never could stop dying or figure out how to level up without starting the entire game over. Gave up at that point.

120 hours for me to finish. Still, have about 10 side quests to finish 2hen the first dlc hits this spring and will do a hardcore run when that comes out.
I also went back and finished 1 and as good as 1 is it's not the same feel after playing amazing 2 with all the updates and inprovements.

Combat is more.simplified, and at least on pc block is q instead of right click, so once you get master strike, it's basically q to win every fight. There's a new blacksmithing skill that's more fun than making potions and the quality inproves the fewer mistakes you make when heating, beating and quenching. You can auto follow roads on horse and once you start sprinting you dont have to hold the button. You get dirty less easily so you don't have to wash as often. Lots of other little things that make 2 better than 1, but the real thing that makes it amazing is the story. And after 2 ful games with 200+ hours of content we're only a few months to half a year max into the story line. It's great. Henry can be in KCD 10 and still be under 25 at this rate.

Cool. I'll have to give 2 a chance at some point.

I went into this game blind, and am really enjoying it. Big learning curve in the beginning, but I like that. The game doesn't hold your hand.

Not actually going to read this thread to avoid any spoilers (other than responses directly to this post), but to save us from a separate thread:
On a scale from 1 to 10 plus Spinal Tap 11, how important is it that I play KCD before II?

This game is on my short list of things I want to check out in the not so distant future.
I have a copy of the original on steam so I am going to try and force myself to play through that first. There seems to be a lot of hype around 2, so hopefully 1 isn't too much a slog to get through.

I’d say a 5. It’s really not that important. There’s enough references to people and events that occurred in the first game to piece things together.

The combat is way easier than 1 but I still die a lot
I was excited for the smithing but it’s so tedious that it isn’t fun
