It was released in 1993. Now it's been 32 years since the film's release. Feel old yet?

I thought it was really dumb to have James Earl Jones as a former player.

It seemed kind of pointless.
The actor choice, not the character.

It was the only redemption possibility for Smalls.

WTF. Mr. Mertle was one of tGOATS.

"Baseball was life! And I was good at it... real good."

Sadly his career was cut short do to crowding the plate.

been feeling that way.

The narration after Squints kisses Wendy and they run off but squints is there by the fence and looks back at Wendy...

quote:

Narrator : Michael Squints Palledorous walked a little taller that day. And we had to tip our hats to him. He was lucky she hadn't beat the *crap* out of him. We wouldn't have blamed her. What he'd done was sneaky, rotten, and low... and cool. Not another one among us would have ever in a million years even for a million dollars have the guts to put the move on the lifeguard. He did. He had kissed a woman. And he had kissed her long and good. We got banned from the pool forever that day. But every time we walked by after that, the lifeguard looked down from her tower, right over at Squints, and smiled.

So good.

Saw a note a while back that apparently the actors for Benny and Smalls got to hang out together on set and stuff for aa couple weeks before any of the other kids were scheduled to show up. Let them become friends already to help with them having a little different chemistry compared to Smalls and the others.

One of my favorite behind the scenes photos. Hercules was a big boy.

Yeah, Basically if the movie came out today it would be set at the same time it originally premiered. Thats fricking terrifying. And the thing of it is, it would work. Think about travel ball kids and tech and such today. 1993 looks a hell of a lot different than 2025 for kids that age.

I was 11 when this came out. an 11 year old today would laugh at us talking about cassette tapes and VCRs and such. No internet. No on demand TV.

Excuse me while i go cry quietly in the corner.

And black. He wasn’t playing for the Bronx Bombers.

He'd almost make the strike zone disappear

One of my favorite aspects of the filmmaking is that Hercules in the exaggerated legend is not only oversized but also this sort of paper mache, stiff legged fake but still unsettling thing.

Which I’m sure had more to do with not having a ton of budget for special effects but it fits so perfectly into what a kid in 1962 would probably be able to envision when it comes to this monster dog that has been exiled to a basement for life.

1000% That summer we had a good crew in the neighborhood. Football, hide and seek, riding bikes, it was all the order of the day. Drank from a lot of garden hoses. No idea what i ate for lunch but somehow i always made it to dinner without dying.

Mosquito truck was always the dinner bell too lol. that sucker would roll out and all of us would scatter to the wind until it was time to do it again the next day.

It's amazing how little I see kids playing outside, especially older kids. Video games and cell phones destroyed how kids were meant to play.

That’s why he was in the negro league. He didn’t play on the team with Babe Ruth, they were just friends.

Apparently there is a NYT article from 1993 where the director confirmed Mr Mertle played in the negro leagues. I’ve also seen it mentioned that he’s supposed to be wearing a Pittsburgh Crawford’s uniform but I don’t know about that.

As a kid and even an adult I never gave it a second thought until it was me mentioned here.

they don’t say that out loud, but the pic of him and The Babe they show has him wearing a Pittsburgh Crawford’s (old Negro league team) uniform
