To Live and Die in LA is now on Prime

Love it. It’s oozing 80s in the best way possible. Willem Dafoe’s breakout role. Willam Petersen is a hell of an actor and should have had a bigger career is a leading man. And of course the Director William Friedkin is in top form here.

I was waiting for football to end to watch the 4k. I did watch another Friedkin movie that I need to make a thread about.

I also need to watch After Hours

If the original Vanishing comes on a service soon I'm going to get pissed

I recorded it off TCM a couple years ago but that recording “expired” this why I still buy physical copies of stuff but glad to see it on streaming

I love you guys but it's like we live in 2 different worlds.

I can't imagine ever chasing a movie from streaming service to streaming service or not having unfettered access to it whenever I like.

It's as bizarre to me as seeing red box kiosks outside Walgreens. It's been at least 15-20 years since I last used a red box

Cute I've had a 4k rip for years and you started this thread instructing people to go to prime because the movie is there.

But of course you deflect because you proudly purchased the DVD so you don't need to chase it anymore.

He’s just letting people know a movie that is not a popular mainstream hit but is well regarded and has been discussed on this board, that hasn’t been easy to find is now available on streaming. It also wasn’t the easiest to find on physical media either for a while.

I read years ago, he chose unknown actors for the movie because he wanted the movie making part of it to sorta be the star of the show.

I finally did watch it today. This movie definitely fricks.

It was so kinetic basically from the get go, in terms of both cinematography and pacing. Usually this fails because the director relies on too much in media res instead of real exposition and then constant mcguffins to justify the pace thereafter (the latest Mission Impossible movie is the perfect example of this), but Friedkin wasn't fricking around this time.

Another area where this film succeeds (and most modern directors fail) is subverting the genre, and I don't mean setting a neo noire in sunny LA without almost any night scenes. Our lead is a bad man, but not an antagonist (as we have a clear one without reproach). Our lead's story unfolds more like Falling Down or Taxi Driver than your typical crime content and it's done pretty flawlessly.

I watched Manhunter a few months ago and it's crazy that Peterson never really became a star, with his crazy back to back entry into film. (As an aside, while both of the movies deal with the obsession and compulsion of the hunt, I will give Manhunter the edge in the character development). Less than 10 years after this, Peterson was relegated to playing the dad in Fear.

As was posted in here, the music was top notch.

This movie was also crazy for the young acting talent. Other than Peterson and Dafoe, you had John Tuturro and Jane Leeves (If you ever wanted to see Daphne from Frasier in lingerie, spread eagle as a gift for a a lady, this is your chance).

The 4K transfer was also excellent. Sometimes transfers from 80s movies can be pretty grainy and not worth it, but this was the best of both words of crystal clarity on actual film (and filmmaking). I assume the version on Prime is a digital transfer of this 4K restoration.

I actually prefer the filmmaking in the airport scene.

The song they used was one of the more perfect uses of songs in a film I've seen in a long time.
