The top federal prosecutor in New York and two senior federal prosecutors in Washington have resigned after refusing to follow a Justice Department order to drop the corruption charges against New York City mayor Eric Adams, multiple officials said Thursday.

The resignations amount to a stunning public rebuke of the new Justice Department leadership of the Trump administration in one of the country's most high-profile criminal cases.

The departures come after Emil Bove, the acting U.S. deputy attorney general, issued a memo Monday ordering federal prosecutors in New York to drop the case against Adams arguing, in part, that it hampered his ability to tackle “illegal immigration and violent crime."

Danielle R. Sassoon, the acting U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, announced her resignation in a brief statement to colleagues on Thursday, the senior official said.

The day before, Sassoon appealed to Attorney General Pam Bondi and expressed her alarm at being ordered to drop the case, according to a letter obtained by NBC News. Sassoon wrote to Bondi that she had attended a meeting on Jan. 31, 2025, with Bove, Adams’ attorney, Alex Spiro, and members of her office.

"Adams’s attorneys repeatedly urged what amounted to a quid pro quo, indicating that Adams would be in a position to assist with Department’s enforcement priorities only if the indictment were dismissed," Sassoon wrote. "Mr. Bove admonished a member of my team who took notes during that meeting and directed the collection of those notes at the meeting’s conclusion."

The Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment. At a press conference on Wednesday afternoon, Bondi said that the case against Adams should be dropped.

In a statement, Spiro, Adams' lawyer, said: "The idea that there was a quid pro quo is a total lie. We offered nothing and the department asked nothing of us."

Eric must be talking.

Clerked for Scalia. Impeccable credentials. Absolute fire of a letter to Bondi.

Guess the depoliticization of DOJ lasted a whole week or two

Adam’s was chosen as a target because he was trying to fix illegal immigration in his city.

He went off the democrat reservation and was punished for it.

Current DOJ is getting NY in line

I've been thinking that. Bottom line, if someone has access to information about where the skeletons are buried, it's best to not male him an enemy. Especially over something he already has the high ground on.

I'm confused. Why does Bondi think the case should be dropped? Is it good or bad if the case is dropped?

I haven't followed this story at all..

eta: Nevermind. I think I'm following now.

Bove wants the case dropped. (Trumper)
Bondi wants the case dropped. (Trumper)

Adams is a Democrat who went against the party.
Adams working with Homan to allow ICE on Riker's Island.

Democrats want Adams to fry for trying to fix illegal immigration.

Perhaps, but Sassoon IS (or WAS) "current DOJ" and not some Merrick Garland flunky. However, sometimes in order to hit your target you need to make a deal with the Devil. I think this may be that type deal.

Tucker did a podcast on it. Adams was definitely being targeted for refusing to play ball with the Democrat's agenda.

It's a week, or two, longer of not being political than Biden's DOJ was.

The idea that Trump has to respect the norms while Democrats don't is absurd. I hope Trump hyper politicizes the DOJ and Democrats realize that we won't sit around and let them do whatever they want without retaliation. Biden and Garland and Pelosi and Schumer brought this on.

Yep. Democrats can't do what they did without retaliation. We didn't start it but we will, hopefully, finish it.

He had a GREAT interview on Tucker where he lays this out.

He was literally told “be a god little Democrat” and he said “no, this will destroy my city.”

Boom! got hit immediately after that.

Yeah. He was such a snowflake he couldn’t handle working for Trump.
