Consumer prices rose 3% in January compared to a year ago, ticking up from the previous month and posing an obstacle for Trump administration tariff policies that many economists expect to raise some prices, government data on Wednesday showed. The inflation reading came in higher than economists had predicted.

The fresh data extends a bout of resurgent inflation that stretches back to last year. Two weeks ago, the Federal Reserve opted to hold interest rates steady in part out of concern regarding the stubborn price increases.

Egg prices, a closely watched symbol of rising costs, soared 53% in January compared to a year ago. An avian flu has decimated the egg supply, lifting prices higher.

Beef prices climbed 5% and bacon prices jumped 6% in January compared to a year ago, data showed. By contrast, prices dropped over that same period for bread, rice and tomatoes.

Core inflation -- a measure that strips out volatile food and energy prices -- increased 3.3% over the year ending in December, ticking lower than the previous month, the data showed. That gauge also sped up from the previous month.

Was it actually an avian flu or an overzealous response to the potential of an avian flu?

I see we’re back to acknowledging and caring about inflation. I remember a recent time where we were told it wasn’t even real. Something must’ve changed for the media to care.

We just went through a presidential election where it was a top 3 issue and we were batted over the heads with inflation.

Wtf are you talking about

Both sides were pumping agenda to end inflation. Republicans by lowering energy, democrats by increasing demand for housing through tax incentives for underprivileged (lololol).

But I found this via a quick Google search…

quote:

As of February 11, 2025, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) reports that over 145 million birds have been culled due to bird flu since the outbreak began in 2022. This includes both egg-laying chickens and broiler chickens

Google AI Overview

Seems like a lot of dead chickens to me. I mean, we apparently have…

quote:

In 2024, there were 369 million laying hens in the United States,

Google AI Overview

Looks like we’ve culled close to 40% of the laying hens in the country.

Seems excessive to me.

There will be some pain and suffering for everyone as we try to navigate our way out of this.

There is no easy way.

Ive been telling everyone for years to save money pay off debts etc. There are tough times coming.
