Just started this last night and watched most of the first two episodes...might have dozed off towards the end of the second as they crossed the Euphrates bridge and were driving through the town.

So far the show has just mostly been marine banter- is it just a slow burn series or do the combat scenes ramp up soon?

The buildup is the frickheadedness of the higher ups and overall bureaucracy that comes to fruition in the firefights and other dilemmas that arise. A former mil person will probably enjoy it more than other people.

It does pick up.

That said, I imagine most dudes who were in OIF would say that banter and delay and whatnot outnumbered combat or other dramatic situations tenfold and that's probably what makes the series credible/authentic.

Its probably the most accurate war movie / show I've seen and one of my favorites, but if your wanting a lot of non stop action this is not it!

It’s hilarious. Don’t watch for the combat.. the whole point is the banter

This show vs. Band of Brothers shows were America's military lost it's way from the standpoint of military leadership.

I’m enjoying the banter, but I need some kill shots mixed in

1. Nate Fick is a complete douchebag in real life

2. No Marine infantry company commander in the history of Marine infantry hasnt known what "danger close" means. frick outta here, Evan Wright.

that said, the portrayal of Marine culture in GK is, for the most part, pretty spot on

It’s a bitchfest from the enlisted point of view. Officers of course hate it because it aired a lot of dirty laundry but it’s hilarious.

I thought the point was Encino man knew it was danger close but he was calling it in anyway to get recognition for it?

It’s even funnier if you listen with headphones because there’s some funny as hell background banter that can be missed otherwise. Also the ambient noise adds to it.

old coworker i was pretty close with was a marine in Iraq at the time. Instead of talking about anything personal he'd just say to watch Generation Kill when asked about his time there.

He is definitely the type to bitch about incompetent upper management

What an uninformed, dumbass comment.

My guess is you are so dumb you cant tell the difference between a world war and counter insurgency operation.

he does try to call it in, with the not-so-subtle message being that he's doing it for credit, but right before that he literally doesnt know what "danger close" means, and everyone has a good chuckle at what a dummy he is. it's preposterous.

i understand that, and believe me, officers have plenty dirty laundry and there are plenty of legitimate beefs from the enlisted perspective. but dont make it completely ridiculous like a fricking Marine Recon company commander not knowing what danger close means.

the medal seeking, the politics, etc - those are legit beefs against officers. i've seen plenty of it. a Marine infantry officer not knowing the absolute basics of fires is hollywood bullshite.

Man this show was so disappointing to me when I watched it. It’s been years and I don’t remember much about it other than being pretty bored out of my mind for the most part. And this board holds this show in very high regard, which generally jives with my tastes. But for whatever reason this one didn’t resonate with me like I had hoped it would.

Is this yet another "LCpl Bagofdoughnuts is a military genius and every officer is clueless" movie?
