Anyone have good recs? I’m willing to invest the time to read a detailed history, but I’m apprehensive in choosing a book because I don’t want it to end up being a bunch of lecturing about white imperialism—I just want a good, well written history.
It seems like The Honourable Company by John Keay might be a good bet. Anyone read this?

Not a book but I recall seeing a few episodes of the pioneer with Jason mamoa that was pretty good that had some fur trade and involved the east India trading company...never finished it.
Apologies that I didn't answer your question.

Fur, Fortune, and Empire by Eric James Dolan is pretty good. The EIC is definitely featured in it, but the book is more about the fur trade itself.

James Clavell's Tai Pan is collaterally about the Opium trade to China, which the BEIC was heavily involved in.

The Anarchy: The Relentless Rise of the East India Company by William Dalrymple seems to be well regarded. I have a copy but I haven't gotten to it yet .
