Hinge cutting trees

That time of year to prep. Are there any trees that give better results? Hack / drill and spray starts this weekend. I am thinking Magnolias and Red Cedar for hinge cuts.
I need undergrowth, bedding areas, and more browse. My past hinge cuts provided shelter for a year or two, but are not productive now.
Just south of Natchez. Any trees to hinge cut for nutrients? Any feedback is welcomed.

Six minute mark says what trees are not good.

In the South, we have cutovers and regrowing all over the place. This is more of a program for up north where they don’t have much bedding cover. Of course, any one property in the South can be void of thickets. Cut the trees that you don’t mind getting rid off. If you own the property, you may consider bringing in heavy equipment to knock trees down.

I wouldn’t hinge cut sweet gums. They are notorious for producing 8-10 stump sprouts per stump which leads to a tangled mess. I’m using hack and squirt and drone spraying to kill as many sweet gums as I can.
American Elm and winged Elm are both high in Minerals when they stump sprout. Just cut them all the way through about a foot high.

Thin your timber and allow sunlight to the ground.

Are you doing this yourself? I have a giant mess of sweet gums in Ms that I need to tackle. But mixed in valuable hardwoods. Would love to hire someone to hack and squirt.

Don’t hinge it. Terminate it.

Tornados have hinge cut my woods the last five years or so. The last thing I need is more undergrowth.

Pretty much doing it myself. I did hire a guy with a drone to spray an 8 acre section in late October. Won’t know the results until spring green up. I did hack and squirt on a 2 acre section in late August and they died pretty quick going to give them a year, doze them into piles and burn.

We have a dozer coming in 2 weeks. Chain saw / hack and spray for existing bedding areas start Friday.
Just want it done well before Turkey season.
Thanks to all for input

What was your squirt mixture?

The Craig Harper Cocktail
1. 50% Triclopyr (Garlon 3A)
2. 40% Water
3. 10% Imazapyr (Arsenal AC)
Mixed in that order. If you mix # 1 and # 3 together, it will gel and be unusable.
I also add blue marking dye so I can tell which trees I have already treated.
