A group of liquidators were hoping to reach a deal with a buyer, but it appears that they were unable to do that.
Golden Gate Capital, a San Francisco private equity firm, had emerged as the leading bidder for the retailer, but unable to raise funds to purchase and operate Circuit City out of bankruptcy, these people say.
Circuit City, which employed about 35,000 workers, was due to present the results of an auction for its assets at a hearing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Richmond, Virginia, on Friday. It had conducted negotiations with potential bidders to sell the company, but told the court last week it may need to liquidate if no deal was reached.

You will be able to get a cheap HDTV this weekend.

I'm completely shocked that a store that gives you a 4 foot long receipt for a cell phone battery purchase couldn't weather these tough economic times.

Add 30,000 people to the list of folks looking for work.

Too bad they don't sell rims.

It's interesting how the banner ad at the bottom of your thread (when I first read your post) was for a company which helps business reduce their debt.

I got a steal of a deal on a guitar hero guitar from them. $20.
Do you have guitar hero/rockband? I bet you would love it.

No, i bet he would love it. Only problem is that its more fun in groups and JT doesn't have friends.

I played Guitar Hero for the first time back in 2006. It's pretty fun, although I tend to get a little dizzy from watching the scrolling for too long. As a guitar player, I was pleasantly surprised at the interface they came up with, although at times, I felt disadvantaged by actually knowing how to play a real guitar.
Rock Band - eh. Not nearly as good. The singing part is kind of stupid. The song selection is not nearly as tilted to metal. And the drums are really disappointing, although someone told me recently that if you do the expert level, then it's the actual drum line, which I would probably really like.

Rock band is fun though as you can play the different instruments, and have more of a band.
Guitar hero is a helluva lot harder. What irks me is that you can use the guitar hero guitar on rockband but not vice versa.
I personally think that rockband has a better music selection, since its more than just metal.

here's a question:
I bought a tv through them in 2007 with a 3 year warranty.
the tv looks like it's getting some kind of bluish/greenish tint in the middle of the screen now.
that should be under warranty right?
I need to find that receipt...

warranties are often the first thing to be ditched during bankruptcy.
Take it in NOW.

A "letter to guests" on the company's investor Web site assured customers that warranties are provided by a third party not impacted by the Chapter 11 filing.

That was when they filed Chapter 11 last year, but if it's third party I'd assume it'd still be ok. The main problem being you might have to send it off for service rather than just taking it down to your local CC.
