Tankless water heater question-No hot water coming out of faucet

Have a gas tankless water heating installed outside the home. House has cold water but no hot water. Not really familiar with these water heaters to know where to start looking for the issue. Any help would be appreciated. House has gas heat and it works so I don’t think it’s a gas outage causing the issue.

Water frozen in the unit outside?
Get out there and hit it with a blow torch.
ETA if anything breaks it’s not my fault.

in the future drip your hot water side. The tankless doesnt kick in when you crack it but it will keep it from freezing if its exposed.

Do these have pilots?

Might have a frozen line. During a hard freeze last year I took a heat gun to the pipes on mine and it started flowing again. Small section that was uninsulated that had the shut off valves.

Water line to tank is probably frozen -

You mean no water comes out when you open the hot water tap or the water that comes out is cold?

You need to go out and hit it with a hair dryer or heat gun. Same happened to me.

have one at my house back home too.
one year either the pipe sending water to the unit or the water inside the unit froze, but I still had cold water everywhere else in the house.
those heaters have a flow sensor in them that kicks them on.
so if the water is not flowing through, it will never turn on to heat up.

Is it normal to have tankless hot water heaters located outside?
Genuinely do not know.
Seems like that would lead to problems like this.

You more than likely didnt insulate the pvc pipes, get a blow dryer out
Also: If you need to access unit but its flush to the brick get a screw driver. You can also debug from the panel if you have a fancy one.

They are inset into the brick walls on newer homes

As others have said, likely an external line running to it. Most tankless water heaters have electric freeze protection where it keeps the internals above freezing.

Are the water pipes outside insulated well? If not you’re an idiot for not doing this.

Thanks for the advice. Will try the breaker and get out a heat gun and see if that works.

Tankless water heaters have a lot of plastic parts that break in freezes. In the 2021 Texas snow / ice storms, all my neighbors and friends who had tankless heaters had issues and had to replace parts or whole units.

I have the added problem of being stuck at women’s hospital with a newborn so I’m asking for my father in law who’s at the house and called me with this problem.

Oh so you’re a woman. This explains a lot.

Could be a few things.
There’s a flow sensor that can get stuck and not activate heating element. Sometimes I have to go outside and pull the power from mine just to reset it, but it also sometimes kicks on after a few minutes though.
Additionally you’re supposed to flush those water heaters out with vinegar solution yearly.
