Review Summary: a Controlled Wow.
Background: Not sure why I was so late watching this. I saw Titus’ portrayal on Sons of Anarchy and liked it, no idea what turned me off every time I saw it come up on my feed.
This is a cop drama with a high level of gravity, very in tune with The Wire, The Shield, etc. In fact, The Wire’s Marlow and Daniels have key roles here haha.
Bosch is a hard arse ex-Special Forces LA Detective who gets insanely fixated on his cases, which puts him at odds with superiors, peers, friends and family.
Lot of police bureaucratic police shite but keeps it interesting. Steady tension and consistency.
S7 (Last) tried to veer off the rails with 2020 politics and dumb choices but was still very good watch.

Now on to Bosch: Legacy
I’m afraid you’re going to be disappointed. It’s season 7 on steroids

Definitely goes down hill once he turns in his badge and goes P.I

If you make it to Season 2 of Bosch:Legacy, it’s much better. But yeah Season 1 isn’t very good.

First season of legacy was by far the worst of all the Bosch seasons.
Second is much better.
Someone here mentioned legacy s1 was produced on a shoestring budget and it really showed.
All that said, I think legacy is a step down from the regular Bosch because most of the supporting characters that made the original show great are either gone or reduced to a minimal role. Chandler and Bosch's daughter are given the extra screen time, and I don't find either particularly interesting (it has nothing to do with them being women, I really liked Bosch's lesbian boss from the original run).

Great show. Enjoyed the character of the Deputy Chief. Thought he played that to perfection. One of the better detective style shows

Now I’m wondering if I should give Legacy another shot. I couldn’t finish S1 and was just coming off first time watching Bosch.

S1 was decent enough, but it got way too heavy handed in the ridiculous girl boss and intersectional nonsense. S2 got away from that and was actually quite good.
What's funny is the thing that bade Bosch great was that it would tackle modern political events without really taking a side. I felt they did a good job showing neutrality when representing both sides. Legacy1 threw all of that out of the window to play the representative game. I was not going to watch S2 as a result, but I'm glad I did.

Started strong but yeah, the introduction of "modern politics" kinda ruined it towards the end.

That's a shame. I liked the book version better where he was a tunnel rat w/ the Big Red 1 and while a contrarian and independent thinker, was never what i would call a hard arse. I always pictured him more like the detective Deniro played in Cop Land. He was tenacious though.

One of my favorite's, love Bosch. Everyone counts or nobody counts!

I've read all of the books and would say Titus plays the character pretty close to the books.
The Tunnel rat background was cool, but to apply it here Bosch would have to be in his late 60s or 70s at the start of the show. That's a bit old to still be an active detective.
The Special Forces background doesn't get a lot of detail if I remember. As in, they don't make him out to be Rambo or some superhero. Just a guy who was a good soldier and is now a cop with a military background like so many others. The Special Forces just identifies him as one of the better soldiers.

Bosch's house is awesome.
It was practically an element of the show considering how many scenes and moments featured the view if not the house itself.
And I like how they frequently make reference that he got it from consulting on that movie, to be clear that he could afford it cleanly and isn’t dirty.

IIRC, his SF background came up in some early storylines, like to explain his knowledge of military procedures, etc., showing a rapport with other veterans. and also him being a badass, but they didn’t overdo it. He kicked some arse but mostly just snatched up some guys.

hard arse
Meaning stubborn, inflexible, ultra focused, emotionally detached, not much for giving emotional platitudes nor very receptive to them, ultra pragmatic, etc., in the cop way.
For example, they showed him struggling to adapt to being a good dad when he and Maddie got close because he wasn’t wired that way emotionally, but they depicted that evolution quite well.

Bosch is one of the all time greats in book and on the screen. He had a code.
Another little detail that always stuck with me was the sign on his desk.

Are we going to get a Bosch Legacy season 3 or is Bosch dead?
Too bad a different studio owns Lincoln Lawyer preventing a Bosch crossover.
Titus Welliver is a HoF actor. And human.
