Other than Belichick, a defensive head coach hasn't won a Super Bowl since 2013

And Belichick hardly counts, he's really more of his own thing. Apart from him you have to go back to Pete Carroll in 2013 for a defensive Super Bowl winning coach. Dan Quinn in 2016 is the last defensive head coach to even make a Super Bowl. It's been all offensive guys and Belichick for 7 years running. There are a few defensive coaches left in the playoffs this year that could break the streak (most notably McDermott or Haurbaugh), but still, 7 years is a long time.
In the 10 seasons prior to 2013 there were 6 coaches with a defensive background that won Super Bowls, 3 offensive coaches and, of course, Belichick.
It's just something to keep in mind while the Saints are performing their head coaching search. Personally, I'm not too bullish on anyone that we have a realistic shot at. Maybe I'm just beaten down, but it feels like as long as Loomis has free reign to act with impunity there's not much hope to improve going forward. The man has no vision for the future, the concept of planning for even 2-3 years in advance seems completely lost on him.
But it's worth pointing out that it seems that the day of the defensive minded winning head coach may be going the way of the dodo.

Bill B was an offensive player in college & started out as an offensive coach - so you are correct - he’s a different animal.

During your sample, only 2 of those super bowls were won by a non-all time great qb. We should get one of those

We’ll make sure we do that

But I also think that’s a pretty small sample size to base an opinion off of; Belicheck, Reid (4), McVay(2), Shanahan (2), Arians, Taylor, Sirianni

This statistic makes me much more confident about hiring a defensive coordinator as HC. Trends don’t last forever and the pendulum is ripe for a swing in the other direction.
Aaron Glenn all the way.

I would have loved to have Mike Vrabel but to no surprise, he's not available anymore.
Probably had his mind set on the Patriots all along though.
that happened fairly quickly.

It might be a small sample size, but it's recency and that's what matters. There might have been a stretch of 10 straight years in which the Super Bowl winning head coach was a defensive guy. But if that stretch was sometime in the 90's it's pretty irrelevant now.

Blueberries are blue. Blueberries are berries. All berries are blue. Except that one time raspberries were raspy.

Haurbaugh - special teams coach before. Not the defensive play caller.

This team isn't winning a SB in the next 5 years. I wouldn't worry about it.

That's a great point, but when people put out these random time frames you always have to question why did they stop there. Sure, going back 30+ years would not make sense, but why only 7 years? If we go back 8 you have to add another year for Belichick and Pederson (offensive guy). 9 years you get Belichick again & Dan Quinn (defensive guy). 10 years brings in Kubiak (offense) & Rivera (defense).
You keep going then you include Carroll, John Harbaugh, Fox, Tomlin... And these are all since the Saints won the SB, so while it has been awhile for some of these; it's not that extreme of a time frame.
The other thing that you would need to think about (if using this stat to support your decision) is during the time frame would be the total number of offensive based HCs vs Defensive based HC. It's easy to say in the past 14 years (since Saints won) there were 18 different SB coaches 11 were offensive & 7 were defensive; but if the league is predominantly offensive based HCs (I don't know if it is, just saying it to explain my point), wouldn't that indicate defensive HCs have a better representation in the SB during that time frame?

Hie history bounced back between ST & DB. Spent more time with STs, but his job before taking over in Balt was a DB coach

The next coach isn't being hired to win a Super Bowl, and everyone should know that.
