its not hard and usually benefits everyone involved. And if you don’t, you’re probably on some level being ignored and/or deprioritized.

People struggle with this most simple of soft skills. It’s astounding

It’s amazing how much life better is when you don’t act like an a-hole.

Don’t be a dick and you won’t get the dick. Or something like that.

I have noticed people from the north east are really shitty at this. I'll throw Chicago in there too, but not the whole midwest.

That’s why you should care about how people think about you. If they have a good opinion about you, they'll treat you a lot better and vice versa. But what do I know? All I hear these days online is “why do you care what people think” as some power trip.

It works in everything except mentally ill flawed ideology.

You can be as respectful and nice as you want. You can explain it three ways, if a person is mentally ill they arent receptive.

Just my 2.

based on my experiences hunting in the midwest the folks there are some of the nicest I've ever encountered.

Is it obvious?

Because my wife (school counselor) has a non-trivial portion of her student’s parents just come in hot with weapons-grade assholery before trying anything else.

Needless to say, nobody in the building is going out of their way to help these asshats and they end up doing twice the legwork to get what they want (if they get it at all).

Concur. Midwesterners are some down to earth folks. Very nice.

I work with a ton of them who relocated to ATL for their jobs, overall very nice people with much in common with Southerners.

It’s not even being a dick. My coworker is nice. But has been ignored for the last 3 months on something. Because they kept emailing the wrong people and because my coworker never introduced themself or reached out other than email on something the people she was emailing ignored my coworker rather than even telling them they were the wrong group.

I had to be the one to go walk by and have an in person chat with them to find out why things have not progressed

That's a bigger problem with the people on the other end of the emails. That's passive aggressive behavior. Talk about shitty soft skills.

Also- ETA - Is it Them or She? You use both. Also a shitty soft skill.

No, it should be taught and upheld by parents from the time kids are able to understand. I didn't have a choice growing up. It was, "Yes/no sir/ma'am" and shut up and listen when grown folks are talking.

We were designed to care for each other, so things go better when we approach things with that intention.
