IMO he absolutely changes the safety room if he breaks out year 2. Even if we bring in a transfer safety ( which I think we will ) spears should be given every opportunity to seize the other safety spot. The kid was a top 60 recruit. The size, speed and range is there he isn’t lacking in talent he simply has to grow in terms of physicality against the run. I still think this kid has elite potential.

I don’t care if it’s Spears, Joel Rogers, Toviano or one of the incoming freshmen, I just want somebody we recruited to come in and ball out like we used to see.
tRant told me we lost our way because Derrick Davis and Toles were from the north. But we started getting LA/ TX dudes again and haven’t gotten back on track. Do your job, Olsen!

While safety is all on our minds, I do want to talk about a general issue - tackling.
Tackling in 2023 was as bad as I've seen it. Those issues remained in 2024, but I think we all saw steady improvement (with lapses as late as the bowl game, of course).
IF (big IF) we can expect a continued improvement in that area, safety play will look better, IMHO.
I agree that, of all the guys currently, on the roster, Spears has the most upside at the safety position. It just remains an issue that we have not been able to point to a competent SEC-quality safety (and, frankly, the corners haven't been much better) in literally years.
The last all-conference LSU DBs were Stingley and Ricks (2020). If you glance back over years, it is expected for LSU to have 2 All-SEC DBs every year. 2014 was an anomaly, with only Ronald Martin (S) and 2013 had nobody (as did 2008). Even when the corners were a little weak (2012), we placed both safeties (Reid and Loston). Peak was likely 2011 when the nation's All American team would have seen 2 LSU corners as the presumptive starters (Claiborne was the only unanimous corner on the team and Mathieu was the only other consensus).
Regardless, for well over a decade, starting with the 2002 season, the expectation is that 2 or 3 LSU DBs will be All Conference. The rare occasions that didn't happen stand out (2008, 2013, 2014). The past 4 seasons with nada eclipses that entire almost 20-year period.

Not sure if it’s been stated but Gilbert player most of the year with a pretty significant shoulder injury that affected his tackling. Hopefully, him being healthy in 2025 will greatly improve his play.

Even when healthy he’s still a liability in coverage he wasn’t good in coverage at A&M either.

But how did you say it? Were you super duper nice and also said LSU for life and proudly wear your toonces gear?
Because our fanbase is really sensitive when you offer logic and fact.

IMO the coaches we brought in not developing the way use to.

As excited as I was to see the 3 LSU players make All Pro, when I saw that along with Stingley, 3 of the other 4 DBs were from Alabama (Surtain, McKinney & Humphrey), it made me sad for the old DBU days in Baton Rouge. Hard to claim the CURRENT title when you see evidence piling up against us. Looking forward to those days again (along WITH continuing WRU, QBU, etc.)

What sticks out to me is physically undeveloped our DB's are compare to the past. I can't help but thing that plays a direct role in the pitiful display of tackling by all our db's the last few years. I hope somehow we address this, and get back to proper tackling, especially in the open field. Somebody teach these kids in the secondary how to tackle. They can't just be great coverage db's.
